Osteoradionecrosis - free flap jaw and maxilla reconstruction

Posted by mavish @mavish, Apr 6 5:06pm

Hi all,
I diagnosed with Rigth tonsils SCC in 2016 and now experiencing severe osteoradionecrosis and offered a free flap lower and upper jaw reconstructive surgery. They will take bone from my leg and construct a new jaw bone. Does anyone had this surgery or now someone who had.? I am looking to understand patient experiences.
Thanks in advance.

@mavish Unfortunately I do not know where in Canada you would go. A Google search for Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery in Canada or specifically Ontario might get you results where you can then call and ask about Free Flap replacement surgery. Else ask your oncologist or ENT for suggestions.

@mavish, in Canada, I would look into the specialists at Princess Margaret Cancer Center
- Dental Oncology & Maxillofacial Prosthetics Program https://www.uhn.ca/PrincessMargaret/Health_Professionals/Programs_Departments/Dental_Oncology_Ocular_Maxillofacial_Prosthetics/Pages/about_us.aspx

If you would like to seek a second opinion at Mayo Clinic, you can submit a request here: https://mayocl.in/1mtmR63

Hi did you have radiation back in 2016? I had osteoradionecrosis. Mine was on the outside where the infection came through my cheek and wouldn't heal. I ended up getting a tethered flap using my trapezius muscle. It was attached for 2 months (yucky) and then detached. Full healing but im very careful as I know any surgery in that area will likely not heal. Hang in there. It's a weird thing as my bone became exposed and the concept that it wouldn't heal was hard to understand. I had no choices because if I didnt cover it I would have to go about with a bandage forever.
All good now.
