Staying Motivated for the Long Haul
My biggest obstacle to maintaining a healthy weight is a seemingly invisible "switch" that goes on and off in my brain. When it's "on" I am in the zone and can avoid the most decadent temptations and will exercise faithfully. But, about a year to 15 months into my healthy lifestyle, the switch turns to "off" and I lose focus and revert to my bad habits of poor food choices (both in what I eat and how much I eat) and I become more sedentary. I am at that point now and I feel a slow panic building as the number on the scale inches upward. I know what I should do, but I am at a loss as to how to get my mojo back. Suggestions, anyone!?

@rosemarya my husband has it. The stretches and arch supports in his shoes do wonders. Rolling a bottle of frozen water with his foot helps, too.
@rosemarya My sister had plantar fasciitis. She did some exercises for it if I recall, and went to a great shoe store that is familiar with all types of problems to get some helpful shoes. It did go away and she has not had a problem in a number of years now, and walks a mile or two a day.

I am thankful for the 'set time' on the treadmill because otherwise I would quit before I should. What is your motivation?
@rosemarya what keeps me going is that doing yoga or walking is my "me time" every day! I truly look forward to it.
Hi, I go hiking with my husband in the state park near us. Sometimes we go after supper.
My motivation is a water exercise class. It starts at 8 a.m. (yes really 8 a.m.) at a nearby YMCA. I thought that I would never get used to getting up that early, but I find I wake up at 6 a.m. because I feel so ready for it! It is one of those easy classes where we do more stretching and range of motion exercises rather than aerobic. The instructor is an RN and everyone in the class is about the same age. It is a therapeutic pool (another way of saying "nice warm water") so it feels really good and the warm water helps the old stiff joints to move easily. We all say that this is the one place where our knees don't make a cracking sound when we move them!
@rosemarya My motivation is continuing to fit in my clothes! My motivation for exercise is simply knowing how important it is for us as we get older. Like @hopeful33250 I do enjoy my water aerobics class. Our is pretty aerobic with stretching at the beginning and end. I am glad it is not earlier than 9:00 though. The Saturday one is at 8:30 and I rarely make that one. I wish our pool was warm like yours, Teresa, it's the regular pool that is used for everything, including a very active swim team. This is a picture of our class that was taken to send to one of the attendees who was out for a while due to a minor stroke.

@contentandwell JK that looks like fun. There is nothing like that in my area. Whoa! I am too old for a bathing suit---haven't had one of those on in decades! We always had a pool at every home we owned except the one now. There is a community pool, but I don't do public. It would be a good exercise; I'm sure. Kudos for getting up and going.

It is fun. The woman, front and center, is the instructor. She is my age almost exactly my age - 2 weeks older. She is unstoppable in the water, has us going, going, going to make it good cardio but when you see her out of the pool you would never dream that she is so dynamic. Everyone loves her classes so hers generally get the most attendees.
I am right behind her.
@retiredteacher I really do not like wearing a bathing suit, I always wear one that covers the top of my thighs, but there’s such a huge variety of bodies there that I do. I do when we go away too, figuring that I will never see those people again.
