Traumatic Brain Injury: Come introduce yourself

Welcome to the Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) group on Mayo Clinic Connect.
This is a welcoming, safe place where you can meet people who know first-hand about living with a traumatic brain injury. Together we can learn from each other and share stories about challenges and triumphs, setbacks and the things that help.

Pull up a chair and connect. Why not start by introducing yourself? What is your experience? Got a question, tip or story to share?

I suffered a severe traumatic brain injury over a decade ago as a minor. The recovery process was long and arduous; however, the harder you work to recover immediately upon regaining consciousness, the better your overall recovery will be. I impressed hospital staff so much at that time that they handed me an Iron Man Finisher medal upon my discharge. Now, I am near fully recovered. This outcome is possible for you too, especially if you’re still within two years of recovery from your accident. That’s when the most healing takes place.

Hi Sonia, my name is Rachael. Yes, you are on the journey. My TBI occurred last September, and I am still on the journey. For me, the most frustrating thing is that there is not a roadmap. I have had to learn to give myself grace, be thankful for signs of progress, and not beat myself up when things do not improve quickly or when they change. My experience is the journey is a very winding road. I had to learn, I have no control over it.

Find yourself a knowledgeable treatment team, and take advantage of all the different treatment modalities available. Things like physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy ( I call it cognitive therapy), and even psychotherapy. You are your own best advocate.

I am fortunate to have two close friends that have some time available during their busy week to listen. They let me talk about my day to day changes. They are my best cheerleaders. They also pull me off the ceiling when I freak out.

I wish you all the best as you greet each new day. My neurologist told me from the very beginning that I will have good days and I will have bad days. It's an adventure!

Take care.

Hi…my name is Sonia and I suffered a traumatic brain injury 6 weeks ago when I slipped on ice and hit my head. This is a first for me..all other injuries and surgeries have been somewhat predictable but not this.
I spent 2 days in the hospital and came home with nausea, dizziness, loss of smell and taste, pain in the head and extreme tiredness. I live alone so that’s been a challenge both physically and emotionally since I’m usually a vibrant and active senior.
I just started to drive a little recently and saw some improvement in my recovery and then yesterday…extreme vertigo, loss of appetite and nausea.
Please tell me this is part of the journey……thank you.

I sustained a TBI as a 7 year old. Went through relearning in school. Never slept well. Had perception problems. Fast forward 40 years and had a spinal injury in combat. An abberation. Unlearn and relearn again during recovery. Always injuring myself due to weird balance. Many physical surgeries due to injuries involving balance. So here I am. Nice to meet you all.

I suffered a TBI (concussion) when I was 13. I recently fell on the ice, and ended up a week later in the er. I’ve been told I’m suffering from severe post concussion syndrome. I’ve had a constant dull headache, am getting occasionally tongue tied, and am having trouble concentrating. Finding and have forgotten song lyrics I’ve known for years. I hope this gets better with time!!
