Dr recommending fosamax after serious wrist fracture .
64 yr old female with recent t-score of -1.8 (have actually been at that number for 6 years) I fell really hard while running down hill relatively fast and broke my wrist on Feb 13. 2 plates and 14 screws later I am still recovering. The surgeon indicated my bone was soft and he felt if was a fragility fracture.. I guess because of what it looked like and how bad it was. So my PCP thinks I should start Fosamax now. I prefer to focus more on heavy strength training and plyos which I have been doing but can do more. Should I find a doctor that is more experienced in this area to help me navigate this issue? I am also small - 5'2" 97 lbs so my bones are small. Thanks for any input on this.

1 ReactionI took ONE FLOSAMAX PILL FALL '25. IM STILL DEALING WITH WALKING ISSUES AND STILL SM PAIN GOING UP STEPS. RUN FROM THAT STUFF! READ ABOUT THE LAWSUITS. MERK, THE DRUG CO HAS BEEN SUED IN CLASS ACTION SUITS.
@llc52infofo Stop. Your problems have nothing to do with taking a single pill.
@cat1203 Thanks! This is really good. It seems maybe I would qualify for the anabolic meds (not that I want to) if they call my fracture a fragility fracture. Not sure who decides that - I fell super hard running downhill. This is why I need a specialist to look at my case.

1 Reaction@daisy17 Thanks for this helpful info. Yes I am confused because my scores are not that bad. Its the serious fracture that seems to be the issue so I need to have a specialist did into this more before I even think about taking meds. I'm just anxious to get back in the gym one this study wrist is more functional! For now I am going to work on the plyos at least.

1 Reaction@njx58 Please don't make dismissive comments. No one can predict whether someone may experience side effects from taking just one dose of a medication.
I found these comments on AI Assist: "Yes, one dose of Fosamax (alendronate) can cause side effects, including abdominal pain and gastrointestinal issues. While side effects may vary, some individuals may experience discomfort shortly after taking the medication."
And: "Yes, taking Fosamax (alendronate) can cause pain as a side effect, including bone, muscle, or joint pain. This pain can occur shortly after starting the medication and may vary in severity."

1 Reaction@bridget11 something I've always wondered about - seems like there is no difference between a fragility fracture and a traumatic fracture as far as osteoporosis goes. I do not believe I broke my wrist because my bones were too frail to survive a car wreck involving an air bag smacking my wrist and breaking it. And that was the opinion of the EMT and the ER doc... that people break their wrists commonly in wrecks; not just we little old ladies! But like trying to achieve the baseline DEXA of a 30-year-old woman just another piece of confusion in regard to osteo.

I took fosomax for 5 years. No noticeable side effects. It was effective. I don't believe it is useful to tell others what to do or not do. We are individuals and our bodies respond individually. What is useful to me is hearing about other people's direct experience.

3 ReactionsYes I agree. It is good to hear other's experiences and attached research and other good source of data has been very helpful. We all make our own decisions based on our unique issues and background. I just don't like to take any meds if I don't have to but if there is one that is helpful I am not opposed. Right now, I would do almost anything to avoid going through with very difficult wrist fracture!

1 Reaction@jozer I know!!! That makes no sense. I am not frail ....lol. I run marathons and I regularly finish in the top 5 in my age group in major marathons like NYC, Chicago, and Boston. I do squats and other exercises with 50-80 lb weights and was working up to higher until I had this set back. But I am small and have small bones but have been like that my whole life. I am getting an appointment with an endo so I'll update after that.
