Stomach issues after taking antibiotics for 15 months:(

Posted by yaduhyaduhsquawk @yaduhyaduhsquawk, 2 days ago

Hi, I have been taking “the big 3” antibiotics for 15 months now for nodular MAC. My doctor recommends 18 months of treatment. I had some intermittent, intestinal issues for the first 2 to 3 months, but kept taking the my probiotics and meds, etc. For the past month plus I have experienced terrible bloating starting below my sternum to my pubic bone. I haven’t made any changes in my MAC med regimen. Anyone else experience this?

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the MAC & Bronchiectasis Support Group.

Not personally, but I have heard other NTM patients complain of developing gastrointestinal symptoms after many months on the antibiotics. I think it’s important to discuss all potential side effects with our doctors ASAP.

This is a link to previous discussions about gut pain and the Big 3. Perhaps you can find some helpful tips among them. I wonder if switching probiotics might help, and/or timing of taking meds?

I made note of these probiotics some here have used with success. Disclaimer: I have not been on the the med cocktail. Align, Endomune or VSL#3

@yaduhyaduhsquawk:

When I was diagnosed with the MAC/BE/fungal infections 3 years ago, I started taking the probiotic Jarro-Dophilus EPS 10 billion CFU at the suggestion of my dietician. (I buy it on Amazon).

In spite of being off the antibiotics now due to side effects, I still take a capsule each day. I have never had gut problems, on or off the antibiotics.

I'm thinking your gut problems will get much better if you take a probiotic daily. It is suggested not to take it at the same time as any vitamins, if you take any. I wait about 1/2 hour and then taking the probiotic in the mornings after my vitamins.

I hope this helps!

Hi,
I Lou and I take a probiotic twice a day as well as I drink Keifer milk every morning. Some people do not like the taste but it does not bother me. I also eat fresh sauerkraut almost every day. It can't out of a can due to heating it killing the active probiotics and it can't be made with vinegar. Salt fermentation is the way to go or buy it in the refrigerator section of the store. Best wishes and stay healthy.

Lou
