Do you notice constipation as a side effect of Parkinson's meds?

Posted by classylady71 @classylady71, Sep 12, 2025

This is my question: Is there any evidence linking clinical trial drugs with cancer? I did not have constipation or rectal bleeding until I was started on the Rytary. In fact, it was the opposite. I had fecal incontinence at times but there was no bleeding spotted ever.

Constipation is a real problem for PD patients. I hope that you have mentioned this to your doctor. An appointment with a gastroenterologist might be a good idea to make sure the constipation is related to PD and not to another GI issue.

In the meantime, I suggest that you browse through the Digestive Health support group on Mayo Connect. There are several discussions related to constipation. You may find some helpful information in these discussions. Here is a link to many of those posts: https://connect.mayoclinic.org/group/digestive-gastrointestinal-problems/

I hope you and your medical team will find some answers to help. Will you post again with any questions or concerns?

Thank you for asking I don’t feel quite as alone. About 2 yrs ago I began falling regularly so I went into my primary care doctor and he said it was Parkinson’s referred me to Neurologist he did some in office tests and sent me for an MRI that confirmed it. This is all unknown to me. He prescribed Amantadine. My biggest concern is my balance I was an avid walker and hiker for decades I don’t have the strength in my legs to go very far. I do balance exercises and ride a stationary bike most everyday. It feels like the disease is progressing slowly but steadily even though the exercises help. This here is a godsend being able to get information from others in the same boat.

@diparvij2359 Constipation is definitely a fellow traveler when Mr. Parkinsons moves into your life.. I have every confidence that I developed constipation within a week of having been coneicieved. One thing that was recommended to me was toeat 2 kiwi fruits every day. [and here's a better way to do it. I used to try to peel the litttle buggers which left at least 1/3 of the flesh still firmly attached to the peel). Treat them like a boiled egg. Cut them in half alonng the equatore Equator and put them in ahandy dandy egg cup and eat then with a spoon. I can assure you this is far better than the 'treatment of choice" in my childhood, which was Castor Oil. Mine was ppresented to me each morning in a glass of orange juice, intended to disguise the smell, taste, and viscouosity of this vile substance, but the only thing I got out of that experience was the inabililty to stand being in the same room with orange juice a refusal to dring orange juice for at least 40 years after I took control of my meals. I was not surprised in the least when I discovered that the poison RICIN is made of the castor bean. This poison has also been used in experiments to cure cancer. It wold not surprise me in the least that this vile substance could also kill cancer, thereby justifying its existence.
