Nebulizing therapy
I was prescribed Duoneb followed by 3% saline for my nebulizing treatment. It has not been effective for me. After using the 2 nebulizers followed by chest compression, I cough (and bring up copious amounts of sputum). However that may last for several hours and I am exhausted. Only a few hours later, I repeat the treatment. I am wondering if others are having similar results. I reported this to the pulmonologist but offered no change. I would appreciate any input/suggestions.

Hello, I an nebulizing 3% saline 2 times a day, for about for about a year. At times I experience throat pain, swelling, and chest pain. How long should I stop nebulizing to heal, than resume nebulizing? Can anyone share a experience and how it was death with? Thank You
@cdward1028 Having a pulmonologist who offers little help makes me wonder about your doctor and if they treat BE regularly in their practice. You might like to check to see if your pulmonologist is on this list.

These groups treat BE day in and day out.
When is the last time you dropped off a sputum sample? You might have something brewing, leading to excess sputum. It's good to rule out an infection. When you say you have copious amounts of sputum, would it be possible to quantify that? I use a specimen cup with markings on the side so I can report to my pulmonologist at my appointments.
Lastly, a knowledgeable pulmonologist will be able to advise you about a recent development in treatment for BE. The treatment is called Brinsupri. With your doctor's counsel you can figure out if you are a good candidate to try it. It's reduced my daily sputum by 40+% and I feel better than I did before.

2 Reactions@scoop Hi there! My doctor just got my insurance to approve the Brinsupri for me, and I cannot wait for it to be delivered. It made my day to hear you say that it helped you with the sputem production. Did you have issues with your insurance covering it for you? Is the co-pay very high?
Thank you, Terri
@sky1 Hello. I wish I had an answer for you, but you will have to talk to your Dr about it. I have been nebulizing 7% saline since 2013 without any trouble. You may have lung issues that are making you more sensitive to it. Are you nebulizing religiously as you were prescribed? Is it that you haven't been consistent enough for you to get used to it. I remembered when I first went on it I coughed violently, but after a week of doing it twice a day, it hasn't bothered me since. I know too that sometimes people just cannot tolerate it. Do you have active MAC going on right now?
@scoop Thanks for the input. I have been on Brinsupri for 4 months. No change as yet. Still hoping?
@windwalker
I have been on this nebulizing treatment for over a year and yes, I am consistently following this treatment. I do not have MAC. I asked if I could try the 7% but my pulmonologist will not prescribe the 7%? I think I am one of these people who can't tolerate it. Plan to go to a BE special practice as I do not feel that I am getting good advice from my pulmonologist. Thanks for your input.

1 Reaction@windwalker The co-pay is dependent on many variables. Type of insurance, private or public (medicare/medicaid) and any supplemental or advantage plan you may have. There are payment programs available I believe, which the InLighten resource can provide more info. Definitely call your Rx insurance plan ahead of time for more info. Wishing you success with Brinsupri!

1 Reaction@cdward1028 Hope you can get some answers soon. Perhaps more testing with a knowledgeable BE pulmonologist? Curious how you ended up on Brinsupri and pulmno refuses to prescribe 7%.
