First chemo - carboplatin/taxol - what to expect - side effects?

Posted by pretzelnin @pretzelnin, Jan 9, 2023

Hello, I was diagnosed with Stage 3cG3 Uterine Papillary Serous Carcinoma 11/11 also positive in ovaries per pathology report after TAH-BSO on 12/21. Chemo on Carboplatin/Taxol recommended for 6 cycles 1x/3 wks for 18 wks. First chemo scheduled Friday 1/13. Apprehensive of side effects specially of neuropathy. Do side effects happen right away? During session? and for how long? Days 1-4, 2-6? Will youbstillbhave side effects on 2nd-3rd week? NP recommended to wear cooling gloves and socks to guard against neuropathy - has anyone tried them and have positive results?

Has anyone declined carboplatin/Taxol and went on a different regimen instead?

Appreciate all your replies and support.
Maria

Dear Maria
So sorry you have to go through this. Be positive and try whatever you think will work for your body. We all react differently to treatments
I have found acupuncture works great for me. No nausea, on the 4th day after treatment I get neuropathy leg pain. But it’s manageable. I walk every day
My third Carbo-Plaxi chemo treatment is Monday and I’m going to try 2 acupuncture treatments that week. One the day after chemo and then on the 4th day to see if that will help with the leg pain. I wear light compression stockings daily. You may ask about taking gabapentin fir the leg pain also
Good Luck ❤️

@ford1929 some people do Reiki sessions 2 days before chemo and find it helpful. Among other effects, it reduces anxiety.

One thing people do is wearing compression stockings and sleeves. They found ice caps etc.uncomfortable and bothersome. The idea is to limit the amount of chemo reaching hands and feet.

Hi- Thank you for responding to my post!
I was recently diagnosed with Endometrial carcinoma
It was diagnosed after what was intended to be a straightforward hysterectomy/ was not suspected to have cancer. Cancer was discovered in both ovaries and my right fallopian tube. After some consultation it was decided to proceed with chemo therapy, carboplatin and taxol every 3 weeks for 6 cycles.
I have had 2 separate opinions who confirmed the same course of treatment.
Pathology confirmed my cancer to be Endometrioid ovarian carcinoma with squamous and sex cord-like features, FIGO Grade 2, FIGO Stage at least II
I was recommended by a friend to consider fasting to help reduce symptoms from the chemo.
I’m 55 y/ o otherwise healthy, active woman.
I’d love any support or recommendations 😊

@lizziegil hi, was dxed on 1/20/2026 with IIIC HGSC of ovarian type. I have had 3 rounds of taxol/Carboplatin and 4th is tomorrow. I have used compression and ice and have some neuropathy and got reduced taxol last time. I too had horrible leg and joint pain around day . After round two someone with breast cancer told me she was put on Claritin and she believed it helped. I started Claritin day 3 after chemo 3rd round and it did help a bit. Hoping it will be even better! Good luck!

I had Claritin at the ready, with thanks to a former cancer patient who voluntarily mentored me before I started treatment. I did not need to use it, but I recall that there’s one particular type of Claritin to buy vs others.
