Posted by scottk @scottk, Jul 1, 2019

Hello: Has anyone on this site had any luck with controlling tinnitus? I see certain things advertised but always sceptical. Any thoughts/ideas?

I appreciate the hearing loss post daveshaw and agree we should be focusing on both however approximately 95% of those who have tinnitus like myself have hearing loss. I have worked for audiologists and found Starkey hearing aids to be the best for severe loss however every brain is different. Some of the advances are Gene therapy hair cell regeneration with many professors that work on hearing aid trials. Their inst much out there that I am aware of however CIs cochlear implants seem to be the best option if your past the hearing aid cycle and I agree like tinnitus we need more advancements and I will support hearing loss advancements as well as tinnitus. Stem cell researchers claim they have found a breakthrough in repairing the inner ear cells however as you know money is tight, layoffs keep occurring. Although I am an American tinnitus Association volunteer you can contact me anytime at (tvtinnitus@gmail.com) I would love to help.

This is Carole. Recently we're but no responser Tinnitus began in my 80s and hearing is getting worse. I hear several different sounds. Timing seemed about the time of Covid prevention injections. Also I have read of relief from taurine for a short interval. I have tried Lamire's for 16 weeks with essentially no changes. Can you comment please. Thanks. Carole

Hello - have you tried sound therapy through your hearing aids my audiologist recommends, listening to soothing music through there, not to have it overtake the Tinnitus, but to get your brain to focus on it. Of course those with out tinnitus can tell you that it does help a little bit one thing to use to see if you can find anything that triggers it to get worse couple things I’ve been trying lately just making sure I relax before I go to bed, watching the sodium intake and alcohol because both of those retain fluid and according to my ENT, that fluid will go to your inner ear. Good luck!

There are different types of reasons people get that plague called Tinnitus, unlike some people here (God Bless them), I only suffering from it for a few months, went to the Audiologist and no hearing lost, try a bunch of thinks, what really helps are the masking sounds and distracting your brain from it, about the masking sounds for me I listen to waterfall or rain sounds COMBINED
with relaxing music (youtube is full of them) but it has to have 2 different sound otherwise I'll still hear the buzzing, beside that and again what helps me from a 8 to a 2 level may not help you,
but cutting the processed sugar from my diet helped a lot, magnesium calms the brain before
sleep and I take it every night. I'm also taking 2000mg of Taurine a day and I believe it helps
I'm thinking of increasing the dose to 3000mg and then stopping to see if it makes a difference.
it went from a level that caused sleepless very stressful nights to a really bearable level now.

I use a headband type of headphone, its very comfortable to wear at night and doesn't go inside your ears. Good luck everyone!

@scottk Hi scott I have tinnitus along time When I was working as I was busy I didn't notice it much .Now that I'm retired I hear it all the time . My hearing aids do help but it still a low hum . I'm in the middle of using Lipo Flavonoid . For 60 days you take 6 a day . For me I noticed milk or any dairy products increase it so I do almond milk and just found out there is a Almond milk yogurt . Also the hard cheese or aged cheese is o.k. All I can say is good luck maybe a food journel to see what triggers it might be helpful . This is something you don't get rid of according to my ENT.

@lioness I found cutting out sugar to include honey, sugary fruits, and alternative sweeteners. Cut out 90 percent of the ringing. If I slip one day and have something with sugar 10 min later the ringing comes back full force.

How long would the tinnitus last after eating sugary foods?

Salt & caffeine makes mine worse. I got hearing aids and that cut out most of the ringing. I have a lot of hearing loss from the tinnitus.

Taurine an amino acid.

3000mg/day (3g/day). I take two 1000 mg tabs with water first thing in the morning and a third later on.

I didn't think it was working until I quit. The relief was so gradual I didn't notice it, but when I quit, the return was quick.

Note: It didn't eliminate it for me, some days it's quiet, others a little noisy but the loudest it is now is about 10% of the loudest it used to be.

Of course, check with your doctor before taking anything.

Bob

@bobbyboomer How long did it take Taurine to work for tinnitus? Desperate for help! Just received my order today!

Last year I took 1000mg of Turine along with 750mg GABA each day for about 2 months- nothing significant happened. But I think that the right combination of amino acids could be the key.

Hearing aids were the answer for me. They block out about 90% of the Tinnitus and have helped my hearing tremendously.
