Kadcyla and neuropathy. Do I need to wear ice gloves and socks?

Posted by botterd @botterd, Mar 29 7:02pm

I'm getting my second 30 minute infusion of Kadcyla. I already have significant neuropathy from 3 months of Taxol. Should I resume wearing the ice gloves and socks during my kadcyla infusions . I'm to get one every 3 weeks for 14 cycles. I've heard kadcyla can exacerbate existing neuropathy. Thanks.

Hello @botterd, There does seem to be a lot of evidence that wearing cooling gloves and socks during chemotherapy treatment helps. Here's some information on the topic.

Are you taking any pain medications for the neuropathy symptoms from the treatment with Taxol?

There is scant scientific evidence that wearing ice gloves, socks, and hats makes much of a difference. Where are the scientific trials? It seems to me that treatment for neuropathy is a low priority in the research world. The ice glove, et al. didn't work for me so I am getting acupuncture treatments, taking an over the counter zinc and multi vitamin supplement, and eating lots of leafy green vegetables including kale, broccoli, and spinach. I am learning to live with neuropathy and it is slowly getting better.

I agree with you. I wore them during 3 months of Taxol and my doctor stopped the infusions 3 weeks early since the neuropathy had exploded. 4 months after the last infusion there seems to be no improvement. I refuse to take gabapentin since it only masks, it doesn't repair. I've read where Kadcyla can exacerbate neuropathy so I may have to resume wearing the socks and gloves just to be on the safe side.

@johnbishop thanks for the additional information. I will check it all out. I refuse to take gabapentin since it does nothing to repair and I don't need the side effects. I take high dosage Tylenol on the days when the neuropathy is worse. I see a neurologist next week in the hopes that she can do more than just write a prescription.
