Harrington rod surgery 40 years ago
I am 53 years old, had Harrington rod for severe scoliosis about 40 years ago (from T3-T12). Had cervical spine fusion of C7-T1 a few years ago. Now facing extension of rod from T12-S1 along with fusion of SI joints at the same time. In addition, I have Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), which creates some issues due to having to hold meds for surgery.
Has anyone else had this done? I am trying to understand the life altering movement challenges afterward (and anything else I should know beforehand) and would love some feedback. Thank you.

So I finally received results of my MRI , shows Spinal Stenosis at multiple levels, but particularly severe at C4-5 & C5-6, with narrowing of the exiting roots on both sides and some pressure on the spinal cord at C5-6. I just typed what my Dr. sent me, she is suggesting we try injections first before surgery ( she is referring me to a pain specialist). So I will see what happens next, trying to stay positive although injections have never worked before so we shall see. Anyone have suggestions? Thank you again for listening I really appreciate all the love and support I have received here.

Hi Martie, i can't help you here. From my back experience, surgeons often have you try conservative approaches, like PT and injections, prior to considering surgery.
My husband has some pinched nerves, in his neck, and Physical Therapy focusing on his posture helped considerably.
Jennifer had cervical spine issues and you will most likely hear from her.
Best Wishes!

@nlback22 I’m a Dr. Fogelson fan too as you know. He excels at what he does and I like hearing your story and how he took a different approach for you. He did that for me too when I asked for a cervical fusion without hardware. That was a good decision for me as I am reactive to metals.

3 ReactionsHow is your back recently?
My scoliosis rod placed in 1977.
Started having lower spine issues when I turned 50 years old.

My surgery to add on to my harrington rod and extend it down to my sacrum and fuse my SI joints went well. It has been a little over 2 years since surgery. I am glad I had it done as I am able to walk, hike and sleep. Though my movement is different I am in less pain. The one thing I have experienced that I didn't expect is that my balance is much worse. I feel it was pretty good prior to surgery and I worked on it. Now, I make a wrong step and stumble. I have fallen a couple of times because of it. Dr Fogelson also did my surgery 2 years ago.

@peggy87 Hi, are you by chance taking Gabapentin? I just weaned off of it after a year and have stopped falling. I never felt dizzy or unstable while using it but I fell around 6 or 7 times while taking it.
Wishing you the best, Sherry
@peggy87
Hi Peggy,
You are the first person I met that has the same history (Scoliosis and Harrington Rod) and corrective surgery with Dr.Fogelson. I am glad you are doing well, but was surprised to hear about the falls.
I had my surgery May 14, 2025. All was going well, but I had a little setback when I had a surprise fall. Similar to you my balance has always been strong, but now I know I need to work on my lateral balance. I wonder if our SI joint fusions play a role in our susceptibility to falls?
I plan to work on my lateral balance with P.T. I was terrified that I may have caused damage to my healing spine. I am having CT's later today and pray that all is well.🙏
Good luck to you Peggy!🙏🙂
Best wishes!

3 ReactionsI had harrington rod in 1973 when I was 16. 12 inch long 7 fused. Below is basically smashed now T7 - S1. I have had 15 months of everything PT, injections, plus chiropractor, acupunture, lots of drugs only take at night to sleep. I have appt at Mayo in May to get their opinion. Locally in Pittsburgh, surgeons say add hardware to make SPACER to open it up. I can hardly walk. The surgery they say is very painful, cut in from front, flip me over then open from back to add the hardware - spacers. 3 month recovery. My pain is so bad now, I am willing to go through pain to get better but not sure what Mayo will say.

I am glad to hear you have an appointment scheduled. My experience at Mayo was wonderful.
I highly recommend my surgeon Dr. Jeremy Fogelson.
Best Wishes!
