Anyone Else Have Eyes Irritated by 7% Saline?

Since I have started Nebulizing my eyes have become very irritated. Of course this could be from something else but just asking to see if anyone else has noticed something going on with their eyes that could be caused by saline.

@kathyjjb Thanks! I’m glad I saw this discussion. I have other reasons for dry eyes which are worse in past month and hadn’t even thought of the saline, which likely contributes. I’m also looking for the tubing to extend it from face, but didn’t have luck on Amazon-lots of o2tubing. I use Optase 3x/day and supplement between with cheaper Thera tears. they have a little more in vials than refresh. I see doc in couple weeks and will pass on any suggestions.

@pacathy Irene suggested the goggles and now I wear them every time I nebulize. Also have the humidifier in my amazon cart. I appreciate any more suggestions-if you get any from doc. My eye doctor suggested warm compresses morning and night-but that's just too much for now-maybe later on. He also told me that if I leave this awful desert environment, it may get better. Seriously, would like to move, 7-10 days over 100 degrees in March is getting annoying.

I use eye drops at night and about once or twice a day I wash with Ocusoft pads which may help get rid of any salt on eyelids. Eye Docs tell me at each visit to do this, use a warm eye pad over eyes and use Gel at night. I do all that most nights and my eyes are getting better. Does not happen overnight, apparently.

@myjourneybe while 7% is the gold standard there are some people who can’t tolerate it or will dilute it until they can get used to it. My Dr doesn’t prescribe it as he thinks it’s too harsh so I’m on 3%.

Hello, I just started the 7% sodium saline and I am unable to tolerate a full vial. So I do half a vial and even that is hard. Anyone else have any problems? I have an older nebulizer. Will I eventually get used to it so I can increase my dose?

@myjourneybe is it making you cough too much…causing bronchospasm ? If that’s the issue, I’ve found using albuterol about 20 mins before the saline relaxes my airways .

@kathyjjb I use a mask I bought from Amazon Medimask, $25. You heat it 20 seconds and put it on, keeps heat on the eyes. I use Oasis Tears but any well known pharma has them, just make sure to get ones with no preservatives. With my Pari Blue Mask I use some eye protection and with the Red Cup I don't need it.

@picartist waxing with the occusoft makes sense. I didn’t think about residual saline on the eyelids contributing to dryness. What type of gel do you use and is there a specific warm eye pad or just something like a warm washcloth. Thanks for the most helpful tips - mine have been driving me crazy lately but I hadn’t made this connection!

@rmoore901 You can wash the eye lids with commercial products like pads from Occusoft or just use baby shampoo. The cloth could be a warm wash cloth, not real hot, just some heat. I feel the washing and eye gel drops are the most important. My doctor did not even know I was using saline, they suggest this for all patients with Blepharitis which is eyes stuck together in the morning and very irritated. This process clears it up.

Thank you for posting this, I have had such trouble with my eyes lately. My eye doctor said sodium nebs. should not irritate my eyes, now I think otherwise. He has me using Refresh gel at night, Systane complete PF 4 times a day and warm compresses 3 times a day…. It’s so difficult to try to do all this stuff on top of the nebs., eating to keep weight up and exercise. I do what I can, especially if I want to get out of my house.

@picartist I'll check out the Medimask. Sounds easier than the warm washcloth-especially my procedure of heating water in microwave and then soaking washcloth in. Just too much to do-so trying to minimize all efforts.

I bought goggles from Uline and they are great! I put them on before I start nebulizing and I can watch TV while I’m nebulizing and protecting my eyes
