Arikayce Lamira for nebbing 7% saline!
I've been quietly saving the Pari Lamira heads included with my Arikayce and using the nebulizer for 7% saline as well for
10 months. PARI website states, The Lamira is specialized for drug-device combinations, but for daily saline therapy, Lamira will handle saline effectively if used.
Since my insurance covered my Arikayce and the Pari eflow nebulizer with extra set, I decided against buying a different nebulizer just for saline because it's been working great! I have yet to change out heads, and am diligent with keeping it clean. Sterilizing e/o day in boiling water.
Anyone else cheating the system?
Terri

Sounds like a rather an efficient plan!
Hi Terri, could you please send Pari website link where it says Lamira can be used for saline?
Thanks
I had all intentions of doing the same and hadn't gotten around to it for like a year. I saved all my stuff too, initially to have backups when traveling while still on Arikayce, but then in case somebody in my support group might need them, etc. I finally decided to give it a go with the saline - it was sitting in a box and if it broke, what did it matter?
Unfortunately, it won't power up. It turns on, shows the "Eflow" logo and serial number, starts flashing yellow and then red and then turns off. I tried it on the plug and just batteries. Super bummed because it doesn't appear you can have them repaired and it's way past its warranty (I stopped Arikayce June of 2023 -- still NTM free, too. Yay!)
Based on my research, the only difference with the Lamira is the container is bigger than with the eRapid. I'll keep all those anyway so when I do get the new base I can keep them for spares.
I have the Trek with the battery and I take it when we do overnight backpacking, which I'm not sure I would risk the in that environment, but I'm going to wait for the next Nebology deep discount and buy one, though, for "normal" travel and home use.
Hey to the 26 of you that privately DM'd me with your thoughts and support. Glad I'm not the only one who thrives on saving money anywhere we can! Continued blessings and gratitude for great lung health and our very positive outlooks on "just normalizing BE into our busy lives." Terri
@laureltn I do take my Pari eflow (with Lamira head) and battery on every overnight camping trip. Here in MN we have the world famous BWCA, so I pack my Pari in its cushioned case then into a waterproof bag just in case
our canoe would flip. The air is so clean up in the BWCA that I could probably skip nebbing and just use Mucinex, but I've found nebbing doesn't interfere with any part of my life thankfully.

1 ReactionI would worry about it in some of the places we've hiked. We did the entire Appalachian Trail after my diagnosis and some of it while on treatment for MAC. Sometimes my pack took a pretty brutal beating, especially in New Hampshire and Maine. The BWCA is beautiful. We'd love to do the Ice Age Trail, but not sure if that will ever happen at 70 years old. Right now I'm gonna work on pitching him on the West Highland Way or the Camino (tried that for this summer and failed).
When I was on Arikayce is when we got the travel trailer so I could refrigerate it and stay compliant with everything. We did a 6-week trip that included hiking in Acadia and Algonquin (loved it there). It was awesome to be able to do what I love and still take care of my health issues.
I didn't nebulize the first 1100 miles or so of the AT, but once we went back in 2022 and were using our car to leapfrog up the trail for those last 900 miles, I had all my gear in the car and would use the Trek for three nights max in the woods, along with the Aerobikas in line, once a day. It worked pretty well.
Happy adventuring!!

7 ReactionsMy doctor told me emphatically that I could not use my lamira (from ARIKAYCE ) with saline! I secretly tried it….. but I listened to her and only did it once. So now that I’m finished with the ARIKAYCE I see others using the pari rapid-e. I called the company and they said the hand pieces are different and they made one for use with other drugs and saline. I ordered one (it was almost $200) and upon examination it is almost identical to the hand pieces that came with the ARIKAYCE ! Lucky I saved all mine as they sent you a new one every month. I still haven’t told doctors about this! But I use it to nebulize saline almost daily! Blessings to you!

1 ReactionYes, I have called Pari, a rep said that Lamira cannot be used for saline.
@swang18 & @szanovec Playing the skeptic here, I wonder if the Lamira handset was developed for proprietary use with Arikayce?
It would be interesting to see the technical specifications for the Lamira and the eFlow.
If I had Lamira handsets that I was done using for Arikayce, I surely would use them for 7% saline.

3 ReactionsSimilarly The Altera handset was developed for Cayston medication. But it is just different enough from the eflow handset that I would not try and use it for saline. I would say it is worth buying the correct handset. Better safe than not. If Drs and the company tell you not to use the Lamira or the Altera for saline there is probably a good reason.
