Osteoporosis quite severe if I started hrt now will it help . I am 74

Any other woman of a similar age to myself with osteoporosis found hrt helpful quickly? I am just so scared of the other drugs. I have had no fractures yet but I feel they are imminent !!

Starting HRT "late" does require deep discussion with your trusted and hopefully up-to-speed doctor; even some endocrinologists (who arent living under a rock) now advocate for it. I am a physician, not trying to dis anyone but Medicine 1.0 should fade out ...Medicine 3.0 is here but you have to find access.
Your individual situation and risk tolerance must be carefully examined, but many of us qualify. I lost out on HRT for 17 years and lost a lot of bone, fractured, and took pharmaceuticals without doing enough deep reading. Now I am back on HRT at 72 for the past year, feeling great and with much study find that many doctors now advocate for HRT. Even with a very high Lp(a) and early atherosclerosis, I and my cardiologist and women's health specialist (Menopause Society) agree it's useful for me.
Nothing is "fast " with bone building, but reversing loss can start today! See The Osteocollective.com, a legit group, research backed with lots of support classes and information on reversing osteoporosis even if you cannot use HRT. Most helpful.

@daylemaples Good to know you are able to do HRT with high LP(a) and early artherosclerosis. Would you mind sharing which tests helped you assess your risk tolerance and also which meds you previously took? Thanks so much.

@gravity3 I started at 73. What results are you happy with? Bone density? My endocrinologist said BHRT can lower cholesterol, and a friend said it was good for kidneys! It seems like it's good for a lot of things...

@gargoy

My libido returned.
No more senile purpura.
No urine leaks.
I feel more present in the world.

I began BHRT 13 years post menopause at age 67. My functional medicine physician checked all my risks and sent me for a coronary artery scan. Everything tested fine, so I began Estradiol patch and Micronized Progesterone. Eight months following my CTX (bone resorption rate) dropped by about 80% and I gained 4% BMD in my spine according to the REMS Echolight comparison before and after. I have no regrets and feel great on the hormone therapy. Like you, I was afraid of the OP medication side effects and wanted more than a temporary solution. The doctor said I would lose any small BMD gains if I discontinued the BHRT, but I feel fine and more calm.

Thanks for info on kidneys and cholesterol.
I love it for my libido. My estradiol pellet also contains testosterone. I don't have urine leaks anymore and no more purple senile purpura.

my story is complicated.beginning at 54 i took alendronate-holiday-fracture-foteo-reclast-holiday-prolia-rebound bone loss. dealing with that now.NOT recommending this sequence. I am fit and have always exercised and lifted weights. Now trying to deal with the rebound loss. Prolia is great for the older, frail, very high risk folks, only…. now i know. I have preventive cardiologist. did ApoB. Hb A1C, high sensitivity CRP. cardiac calcium score. Lp(a) is 262 the highest i have heard but now my total cholesterol is 70 and ldl-c is 54 on 5 mg rosuvastatin, zetia and EPA fish oil, vit C . all supported by literature. My cardiol not into supplements but I feel good, do high intensity workouts and will take the first drug coming out of phase 3 trials for Lp(a) hopefully this year. hope i didnt overshare.

@loplady I am in the UK. I purchased it from Bone Balance. I don’t know whether they can export it or not . It has been scientifically proven to help build bones spine and hip . It is a collagen and youbuse one scoop of powder a day into tea or coffee or cereal or yoghurt . No side effects at all. I am 75 diagnosed severe osteoporosis but recently undergone a spinal fusion major operation . I was told my bones were strong enough to hold a cage and two screws !! It’s a tough journey but I am trying to do it the natural way as I am very sensitive to meds of any form . Good luck

@tiny28 - Great to see that you went from severe osteoporosis to being told your bones were stronger. Did you have a new DEXA score to determine your bones had gotten stronger?
Also, do you think it was Fortibone that helped?

@daylemaples Thank you so much for sharing your story. You did not over share! I am so sorry that your doctor did not know about sequencing osteoporosis meds. Many doctors don’t know. I appreciate the information on your medical history and testing prior to HRT.

@mo215 no dexascan until sept this year due. But having two screws and a cage fitted into my spine with a reading of -4.2 previously seems a miracle ! Dexascan does not show the whole picture of your bones history it’s determined by your lifestyle and ancestry sometimes . Even so I won’t be complacent but just keep hoping things turn out . I suffer chronic pain with my sacroiliac and also have chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia so life’s a struggle !!

@tiny28 Thanks for answering. Does that mean the surgery did not help? Sounds like you have a lot going on.

@mo215 so far, four months on, I am a lot of pain as it has changed my biomechanics. At 75 that’s a big deal!! I do think that my sacroiliac joint dysfunction and hypermobility has always been the real source of pain so now I have even more to recovery from and try to heal . I can’t tell you how much this is all affecting my sleep , my life and my mental health too. I am a real tryer but I feel beaten right now .
