I was on Diclofenac for about 4 years. My blood pressure suddenly elevated to a very high level . NP discontinued it as it was a side effect from this NSAID. Now on arthritis strength acetaminophen twice a day with an added Tramadol on increased pain days. Bp adjusted with a change of Bp meds as well. So no more NSAIDS for me.

I got a very bad case of hives all over my body after taking Celebrex for about 10 days....it was from head to toe!! Had to take Prednisone to get rid of it. Tried Meloxicam and Diclofenac pills....didn't work. I now take 1800mg ibuprofen and 3900mg of Acetaminophen a day....waiting for my hip replacement surgery in 2 months.

I ended up in the emergency room with acetaminophen toxicity from taking two Excedrin migraine tablets in a 24 hour period over a two week period. The admitting doctor had the sense to do a toxicity blood work which turned up this dangerous condition. It took three days of a constant IV drip to bring my liver levels to normal. I had not even come close to the daily limit of acetaminophen but yet had serious risk to my liver. Please be careful with these dosages. I know pain is difficult but try to make peace with it until your hip surgery. I do wish you the best as having two hip replacements, the relief was exquisite.

It’s variable. I think the topical diclofenac Voltaren is best for me. I use topical CBD too, but I think mostly it’s the capsaicin put in it that is more beneficial than the CBD. I also agree with joe that Biofreeze is amazing.! I was able to get rid of most of my top foot pain by taking. Biglycinate iron pills, a good B12 supplement like “vitamin code“ and eating an egg or two in the morning. When we get older, we don’t digest B12 and iron sufficiently. At least some of us don’t! And the nerve sheaths act out. So by getting substantially more nutrition, absorbed into my bloodstream, I’ve cut down on 90% of my arthritis pains. Which weren’t really arthritis pain at all, but inflammatory reaction pain from irritated nerves. I have a body full of arthritis according to the x-rays, but that’s not what causes the pain in inflammatory reactions does

@tarmansbks Hi. I was done taking the acetaminophen and ibuprofen in September 2024. Had the hip replacement surgery and was a total success! Living pain free now and loving life! Back to hiking and biking and long walks!

Wonderful you had a successful recovery and are living life large! I am fearful of acetaminophen, it is easy to think there are no risks to it. I am glad you are off both. best wishes.

@tarmansbks Thank you for your comment . I’m staying below the recommended daily mg of dosing for a twenty-four hour period . Well aware of liver toxicity limits.

@heyjoe415 my total hip replacement surgery was back in Oct. 2024. And I have been off acetaminophen and ibuprofen since a week before the surgery. Surgery went great and I feel like normal again.

Oops!!! My bad Cindi. I didn't realize your post was from 2024. I'm very happy to hear your hip replacement went great!

Joint replacement is amazing to me. I inherited osteoarthritis - thanks Mom! - and have had both knees, right hip and left shoulder replaced. All recoveries went well, I needed very little pain medication - and the best part, all the pre-op pain was gone!

Any way my apologies for not checking the date!

Thanks for this very interesting post Lorie.

I have long suspected that it is the body's inflammatory response, rather than just the presence of osteophytes, that creates most pain. Inflammation results in chronically swollen joints.

Two things I do now - 1) I eat as little refined sugar as possible. Sugar does something weird with bacterial in the body to produce body-wide inflammation, and 2) I use ice on painful joints, never heat. Heat feels good at the moment it's applied, but just like sugar, it creates long-term inflammation. I stay away from heat packs and hot tubs, saunas, and steam rooms as well.

Well, and I've had four joints replaced now, and each was a success. I do battle a myriad of lower back problems, but I have a very strong set of core muscles, and my surgeon tells me that is keeping me from vertebrae fusion surgery. I'm very motivated by this!

Thanks for the dietary info and tips Lorie. Much appreciated!

Joe

I like voltaren pretty well. Just remember that it adds to the NSAID load.
As far as CBD goes, do you mean topical CBD or oral CBD? If oral, Do you mean gummies or tincture or smoking flower or??
Topical is a mixed bag, really topical CBD is super good for your skin but I don't find it does much in the way of pain relief.

@deborahyost3 Topical cbd works if it’s a 1 to 1 ratio. Best stuff you can imagine but I think you have to be in a state where marijuana is legal.
