Can’t lose weight. Need T3? Any suggestions?

Posted by jerzi10 @jerzi10, Mar 1 8:21pm

I have been on Levothyroxine for 4 years post thyroid cancer and removal. I am very active at 62 and can’t seem to lose weight. I would love suggestions for anyone who found a way

@jerzi10 have you tried intermittent fasting? In an eight hour window you eat whatever you want, then fast for the next sixteen hours. Most of the sixteen hours are spent sleeping anyway so fasting for sixteen hours is easier if your eating window is from noon to eight or from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. you can drink water and black tea or coffee (without sugar) any time, even during the fasting window.

Jerzi10, T 4 converts to T3 in the body, except in people who lack the enzyme type-2 deiodinase (D2). You can get genetic testing for that, but you might be on too low a dose of the synthetic T4. Do you have an endocrinologist or rheumatologist prescribing. You might consult with one (or a different one) to ascertain that your dosage is appropriate.

@jerzi10, I hope you saw the helpful posts from @gently and @rashida. Have you talked with your oncologist or endocrinologist about the challenges with weight loss? Did they have any suggestions?

I'm in your same boat. So frustrating. Going back to doctor in a month. I'm keeping a food diary. I've been doing Keto/Carnivore for several months and haven't lost a pound. Last time I saw her she increased my Levothyroxine but that didn't help with weight loss. Prior to thyroid cancer/ removal Keto/Carnivore worked well for me. So frustrating.

There are hundreds of reasons, not just genetic that people become poor converters of T4 to T3. Liver issues are a big one so that is a great one to check, being overweight hurts, mostly any other inflammatory, GI, Liver or so many other issues cause poor T4 to T3 conversion. In a few people genes are involved but mostly other reasons. Try the fast from 3PM to 7 AM, it does help, find any inflammatory foods and take them out helps. I take Armour thyroid, I take it 3x a day, really helps. Things like Armour are not once a day, don't listen to anyone that says take it all at once, that is a T4 idea, or they don't need much is possible too but most people spread Armour over the day. The charts of converting doses over from T4 to Armour are really bad, some are out there so far off it is laughable, so be aware of that.
