Told I had kidney disease at stage 3
My EGFR is 49. I was told that stage 3a is not serious for a 76 year old guy. When I was told it was stage three I was alarmed. What happened to stages 1 and 2?
Any others have this same issue?

@queenbeesl Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect! You ask what is a normal eGFR. That really depends on a person's age and other demographics. Is there a concern you have?

I was told the same at 90.!!I wonder myself.
My kidney Dr told me at 90 35 eGFR is ok.
I am 90 years old and have stage 3a kidney disease with 53.7 eGFR and creatinine of 1.27. MD response was not surprising for your age. Over a period of 4 months it dropped from 70 when we moved to an independent living facility that does not prepare food for our type of healthy eating. I think my problem was too much sodium in my diet effecting my blood pressure which is destructive to kidney function, so I am working hard to limit my intake. I have discovered that much of the chicken sold in super markets has injected sodium or is sustained in a salt solution during shipment. After much research I discovered that Whole Foods sells Bell & Evan’s chicken breasts with no additives including sodium. We have started cooking our own meals part-time.I am joining a food committee and hope to make some changes.
To complicate matters I also have prostrate cancer and that is a whole other story but got the wife in a good place so will see what happens next.

3 Reactions@05271935 You're never too old to have kidney disease. And I don't mean that in a smart aleck way. I will turn 80 this spring and believe me, this was such a surprise. Since I was diagnosed with breast cancer the year before, this was really devastating at first. The big difference has been my renal dietitian. I've found that doctors do not have time to advise us. In my smallish southern city the nephrologists did not have anyone to recommend! But I found someone online and she has made all the difference. (Many are certified in different states and they do the Medicare filing, etc) Diet is key and my creatine numbers went from 1.69 to 1.18 once I started reading labels and eating right. The eGFR is also rising. (These are all numbers I never paid attention to...) I also found that the FB forums do not carry the latest, most accurate information. The dietitian works from your bloodwork. Sees what you need to change. I have learned to make meals that my husband often shares. (There is also a FB CKD page where people often share tips) I'm glad you have your wife to help you. Onward!

3 ReactionsHi! I’ve been on a low protein plant based diet going on two months now (keto lifestyle previously) and started a sodium bicarbonate tsp with lemon regimen plus upping my water content. Has anyone seen their egfr increase with that? How bout “lymphatic drainage” supplements? Do share!:). Anyone increase their egfr? What did you do?

Yes, similar experience. Was told that CKD 3 is not serious by several doctors. But, there is important information regarding foods and medicines to consume and avoid.
Food list what to eat and what not to eat. A Kidney diet list!
@tpall248 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. I am glad you found this group to help support you on your journey.
Renal Support Network rsnhope.org has a lot of information on diet and recipes. And they have online support groups, with one for eating!
The National Kidney Foundation also has great information: kidney.org
What Stage are you at? Keep in mind many people with CKD may have other health conditions that require diet limitations. It can be a challenge to comecup with a plan that works for you.
