furosemide not working
I woke up a a week ago after going to urgent care for the flu, and ended with full body edema. I then to my local ED and they sent me home. I then went to Mayo ED and after numerous test, many with abnormal results, I was told it was from receiving 2 high dosages of steroids for the flu and pneumonia. On Friday, I was given furosemide and told it should get rid of the swelling. I will be taking my last dose tomorrow, which is 4 days on it and my edema is still present. I am nervous that something was missed and it was not the steroids that caused it. Has anyone else had a similar experience? I have never had any issues with steroids or edema before this one.

Hi, @twiesen I hope you are doing better and have gotten some rest. I am tagging @bigbon who may have advice about alternatives to furosemide.
I am not medically trained and do not have experience with furosemide. I have read that it is given in different dosages and frequencies. If you are comfortable sharing it may help others to know a bit more about your situation, for example these details and what abnormal test results came from your ED visit when you were prescribed furosemide.
I am full of questions….Do you have a doctor you feel comfortable checking in with? Have you ever had an adverse reaction to steroids, or have other health issues?
If you had been on steroids for a long time your edema would make sense. Most doctors when prescribing meds start with the lowest dose before increasing it. You should reach out to your doctor and ask about an increase in your dose of Lasix You should also be taking potassium if you take Lasix and keep up your fluids.
