ADT Side Effects: Anyone had increased shortness of breath at rest?

Posted by stew80 @stew80, Mar 13, 2025

Has anyone had increased shortness of breath (dyspnea) at rest when taking Casodex and/or the Eligard injection?

I used to have a lot of short of breath while on Firmagon, they switched me to Lupron six months ago and the shortness of breath went away along with getting hot flashes. Best to all.

When I switched to Orgovyx My hot flashes went away for five months. Then they returned as eager as ever to make me uncomfortable.

After five or six years on Lupron, I would catch myself having to breathe deeply occasionally. Just a weird shortness of breath even on Lupron. Another one of the ADT side effects.

@jeffmarc I experienced shortness of breath when doing a brisk walk or jog with/after my grandkids; it wasn't a problem pre-Orgovyx. I completed my short-term 6 months ADT three days ago, post-April 2025 SBRT. I anticipate to find out after a couple months, when Orgovyx shall have been out of my system, if I will be back to doing brisk walks or jogging with no shortness of breath.

I walk a mile on the track across the street twice every day. I started drinking electrolytes before going out and I can run around the track the whole time without any breathing problems. If I don’t drink the electrolytes, I can only run halfway around the track and I have to walk for a little while and then I can run again.

It really surprise me how much electrolytes helped.

Interesting that somebody should respond to this after so much time.

I now can run around a mile track without stopping whether I take electrolytes or not. Built up the stamina using electrolytes. I’m not even breathing heavily when I’m done. I do sweat a lot most of the time.

Have you had blood work to see if you are anemic? That will cause shortness of breath. I went anemic on Lupron and it corrected after 3 months after switching to Orgovyx.

Lupron side effects are horrible and trash your entire body. I stopped 7 months ago or thought I would die and still have every side effect anybody has ever mentioned. However, I do not get tired and keep exercising about an hour most days.

@pesquallie I just experienced anemia and some fatigue. I too kept exercising which kept the weight off.

I'm in my third month of Orgovyx use and am experiencing shortness of breath. Just completed a cardiac stress test today, have had an electro-cardigram.... all are normal. I've told my oncologist about it but he replies that SOB is not a side-effect. OK, I guess I'm the exception to the rule, but anecdotally the onset started a week or two after my first dose.

It sounds like your doctor has not kept up with all the side effects. Orgovyx is ADT.

Yes, Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT) can cause shortness of breath (dyspnea). While not the most common side effect, it can occur due to cardiovascular issues (weight gain, heart issues), anemia, or as a rare, serious allergic reaction. Shortness of breath is a symptom requiring immediate medical attention to rule out underlying conditions.
