Eye Vitamins
I am diagnosed with Drusen. No Macular Degeneration diagnosis yet. I am on the Mediterranean diet. I understand that ARED2 is only recommended for those who have AMD. However, I have been told to take AREDS2 by 2 doctors.
I am know there are lutein and zeaxanthin supplements also. I am looking for suggestions and recommendations on these supplements...what brands are best that don't contain seed oil. Also what brands of AREDS2 without zinc. I have had genetic testing and it is recommended I take supplements without zinc. Any help would be greatly appreciated. This is so confusing and retinal specialists and eye doctors don't seem to want to take the time to discuss anything and are rushed. Thanks so much.

I been on AREDS2 for about 2 years. Don’t ask me if it helps it is costly and I get it at Costco.

I’ve been taking AREDS2 for about 10 years, upon the recommendation of my ophthalmologist. I presume he is thinking it might be protective against future vision problems. I trust him, the pills don’t bother me, and I can easily afford them (at Walgreens). So I’m happy to take the gamble. (Note: I do now have some Drusen.)
Regular AREDS2 capsules do contain zinc. But I just read (in Wikipedia) that one can purchase each of the components separately, and thus avoid the zinc. I suggest that you consult with a pharmacist. Also, contact “Preservision” which is the brand that I use, or another reputable brand. And look on the Mayo Clinic website for information about the drug.

For detailed information about AREDS2, I recommend that you look for the article about it from the National Eye Institute at:

How hard for you to have vision problems! I'm so sorry that you do. I have Retinitis Pigmentosa which is a vision problem also. I've never tried Allreds but what really worked for me was eating lots of foods with lutein in them. I ate a large amount of carrots, peppers etc. My eyes started improving to the point that every time I saw the eye doctor he was amazed at how improved my condition was and it was all due to eating foods with lutein in them. I haven't had to see a Retinitis Pigmentosa specialist in several years now. I just go to a regular eye doctor. I'm also not going blind which is the normal result of this disease. You can do a Google search and find foods with lutein in them.
Besides that I also prayed a lot and asked God for help. He was there for me as he can be for you also. He made you and he can fix you! I'll say a prayer for you too.
I wish you the best.

1 ReactionThe most important foods you can consume for eye health with AMD from the research literature;
1. Salmon - 3 times a week -filet or salmon cakes . Fish like sardines or anchovies . If I eat pizza I use real anchovies for a topping.
(Chicken is simply neutral )
2. eggs - the yolk in particular
3. Kale and spinach - cooked steamed. I have kale powder I use from Frontier foods for soups.
4. Mostly eat Lentils, beans, brown rice
Japanese rice cooker can be used for whole meals -just lay protein on top of rice to cook and add spices.
5. Herbs -turmeric, parsley ( tabouli) saffron
6. All yellow vegetables --corn squash and peppers
7. Coffee is beneficial
8. Yogurt and berries fir dessert
MacuGuard is Areds with saffron not zinc. Life extension. This is what I am taking now. Only 3 party supplement testing that's trusted is Consumer Labs- a paid service but worth it. It is their recommendation. I still use mega vitamins like NAC , PQQ and NMN etc. I still use a telemed preventive medicine MD for bi -annual consults that I pay out of pocket for and he prescribes one longevity prescription- low dose 5mg weekly rapamyacin . Cost about 1k a year total.
My sister's AMD went to wet and it was just a week ago that she announced this and is receiving anti veg shots. It scared me. She smokes and has a poor diet. My intermediate dry AMD of 10 years on is stable and I am seven years older and a non smoker . I really work at trying to keep the AMD stable . However, my main failing is not exercising which is very beneficial for circulation and the retina. I need to improve.

4 Reactions@pml thank you so much for your kindness. I am eating the Mediterranean diet. I do believe God answers prayers.
Take care and God bless you.
@sjs1 thank you so much for this great information. I follow a very similar eating plan. I don't take supplements yet but I have heard of macuguard. I also use consumer labs for information. They are great. Congratulations for keeping your AMD stable. I am trying to prevent further drusen and advancement. I am going to another retina specialist next month and talk to them more about supplements and I will ask about macuguard. Again thank you so much for all the information. It is very helpful.
I am being watched as to eye pressures for pre-glaucoma. Different eye drops by prescription only as well as dry
eyes with Systane complete & Refresh hydrating drops, etc.
I had been using turmeric as well but got expensive so since I am no longer using that, I have noticed some strange vision issues. Especially when going from close up desk work to looking away at normal daily housework or watching tv. Not sure I need new prescription lenses to see clearly at all distances.
I ALSO have Glomerunephritis, diagnosed at Mayo years back.
Also had a rare new surgery at Mayo Clinic Hospital in 1994, called a hepatectomy where doctors removed 2/3 of my liver as I was bleeding into my liver.
