Solanine poisoning
I suffer from solanine poisoning derived from night shade fruits / vegetables. Since age of 14. With joint swellings and aches. Keen to learn about this and eventual remedies other than abstinence

At age 84 I have been off nightshade for 40 years and find the only way to avoid the pain it produces is not to eat it. I have not eaten a potato in the 40 years but from time to time have tried a poblano pepper (incredibly good)
and eggplant to find I really must not eat them at all. I occasionally eat tomatoes and find cooked tomatoes don't seem to offend. Many people with various arthritic diseases that I know have found that avoiding solanine solves the problem for them.

3 ReactionsI am now realising fully the effects of solanine foods after months of symptoms in gastro-intestinal joints skin eyes muscles throat respiratory and head affecting sleep energy mood and cognition. I see this as a hypersensitivity not a classic poisoning. It is sustained by even a drip feed of suspect foods tomato bell peppers black pepper seasoning tomato sauce and potato. When totally flooding my system the body expresses a continual symptom picture of one or more effects and it has taken a long time to put this all into the context of solanine as l thought other foods or supplements were the cause. I suspect solanine causes so much bodily dysregulation in sensitive people that other foods also create sensitive reactions that may involve high histamine. So it is a comex picture easily disguised and misinterpreted. I also think solanine effects linger for some time after consumption so many of us will need answers related to how to clear the effects from the body more quickly. I have had some benefit from high dose vitamin C to counter the inflammation but other possibilities will be likely too.
Good luck to everyone dealing with this as it can be a real struggle.

4 ReactionsDecades ago, Rodale Press asked readers with arthritis to see if avoiding solanine would help, and to report their results. Many people reported positive results, but the most interesting to me came from 2 brothers with arthritis. One did the no solanine diet, the other couldn't bear the idea (no tomatoes, potatoes, peppers or eggplant. And note that eggplant is old world, so it's not all just new species to Europeans.). So that brother took Niacinamide. At the time, Dr. Kaufman was probably still living and his books may have still been available. Certainly Rodale Press would have reported on the use of Niacinamide for athritis according to William Kaufman. (A moderate dose every 3 waking hours. I have tried it a few times when I had a bout of inflammation, eg, once from a bad sting, and was VERY IMPRESSED. It also helped with chronic aches and pains from "fibromyalgia" which turned out to be from gluten, or maybe just from glyphosate in wheat products.)
