Eliquis & muscle weakness, other accelerated symptoms of PD
My husband has been receiving Eliquis as a "protective"
measure since March 2024. 5 Mos. ago there appeared
noticeable muscle weakness and other accelerated symptoms of Parkinsons . Have any others seen this???

Hit the wrong button and lost part of my message😝.
As I was saying, he has been on Eliquis for a year. I have noticed weakness, but just thought it was part of his PD. He is in Stage 5. PD is a strange disease. You don’t know what or how a particular thing will affect the patient. I guess the best thing is to read, study and ask questions. I have learned that not many in our area know about or understand PD.

1 Reaction@chanemann1 - I moved your post here where more members are familiar with apixaban (Eliquis) in the Heart Rhythm Support Group you've participated in before. I think they can speak to whether they've seen noticeable muscle weakness and other accelerated symptoms of Parkinson's after use of this medication. @JustinMcClanahan may know of others who've taken apixaban (Eliquis) or who have even experienced similar effects whom he might bring into this discussion.

1 Reactionmy Zarelto blood thinner works by reducing the number of red blood cells, which, in turn, reduces my endurance when I do physical things like hiking, bicycling, kayaking. It is really frustrating to completely poop out after a few minutes of physical activity. It’s a trade off: cease taking the pill and increase my red blood cell count, thereby increasing my endurance, or risk a blood clot from an AFIB attack.
@wagonroad
Thank You!!
People have such interesting things to say or to observe.
I wish we had more thinkers out there.
Carl has had so few issues called AFIB. This occurred during and only after a hospital stay. The nurse working with the Electro cardiologist commented in her notes "probably related" to the high dose anti-inflammatory drugs....prednisone, et. Yet to continue for the rest of your life seems oddly risky. Also , to believe that a "blood thinner" would not affect you in any way is (to me) dangerously simplistic ???
@wagonroad
Thank you for those ideas to ponder .
@cmspringer
Yes, I agree. In fact , Parkinsons is discussed as a problem
primarily related to our 1. Environment 2. How we exercise.
3. What our foods are. How we eat them, (Our nutrition
matters tremendously)
So , if you're 80 and very healthy with
the drugs you are given to "protect" and "maintain" Type 1 Diabetes and Parkinsons (both exercising and eating very well) but OOPs all of a sudden you're given very strong drugs related to a new problem, seemingly unrelated to Diabetes and Parkinsons....... What will happen ?
and Why?
Parkinsons responds to really good methods of Health.
Hard work , of course, but successful .
I have had Parkinson’s Disease for a number of years, and am in the advanced stage! Also, I am on Eliquist for atrial fibrillation. I have been on Eliquis for a couple months now, and I have not encountered more weakness or progression of any Parkinson’s Disease symptomology! I am nearly 80 years old, and I do have trouble walking and rigidity; however, those symptoms probably got worse, because recently I had a stroke! I am scheduled for a ‘Watchman’ heart implant, to close off the atrial left appendage, in order to eliminate blood clots, this week. That will enable me to go off Eliquis in another month, or so, and it is supposed to make it possible for me to go off blood thinners, for life! I’ve had about 4 falls a year, for the last several years, because I lose my balance, easily! I have gone to physical therapy, and I use a cane! Falling can cause a brain bleed, and I have hit my head when falling, several times! Good luck! I understand how a person can feel, when they feel symptoms advancing!

4 Reactions@wagonroad Thanks! I truly needed your encouragement today! I never know from day to day, if I’ll have a lot of trouble just doing the normal task, of walking, one foot at a time, in a consistent manner! Yesterday, I could hardly walk. I stumbled once, and started to fall! I think I drag my left foot (affected side), without realizing it! Hopefully, today will be a better walking day! Thanks for being so supportive!
