What is the normal way of taking care of hyperthyroidism?

Just diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Tested at 0.07. Really tired. No sleep. Some hand shaking but only sometimes. Racing heart causing extreme sweating. What is the normal way of taking care of this issue

@mbadt So one doctor wanted to remove your thyroid and another one helped you get off the medications you were on and found that your thyroid was normal or fine?

What medications did they have you on and what and how did the doctor help you off of them?

MD said remove it. I did not agree so went to an Endocrinologist who agreed to try med first. He kept a good eye on my labs and adjusted my med as my numbers went down. Eventually they were good enough to try no med and I've been in remission since.

We tried propylthiouracil first but I was allergic (hives) so we switched to methimazole.
I am a true believer in anti thyroid meds as a first line approach. Had it not worked, I would have agreed to the surgery for sure.

I was recently diagnosed with Hashimoto's Disease and told that the medication she wants to put me on is Levothyroxine. Has anyone been on this med and how long does it take to see a difference with less fatigue, more energy, less soreness around the neck? Does it take a few weeks or month or two to kick in and see a difference or is it quicker acting then that? The fatigue is rough!

My Dr did a ultrasound and a thyroid nodule was found, however it is small. My Dr. doesn't want to do any testing on it. Well, I am having sore throat, difficulty swallowing, dry mouth. I would prefer to have more testing to make sure nothing else is going on, like cancer. Has anyone else been in this situation? I am thinking about finding another Dr. as I don't like the one I have. I also have CVID Immune Deficiency. Anyone else have an immune deficiency too? Thank you!

@animallover25 I was diagnosed with Graves disease in 2015, during the initial diagnoses a small nodule was detected. I was prescribed propranolol and methamazole, told not to be concerned about the nodule that most of them are benign. in just over a year the Graves was under control and medication discontinued. Two years following I was diagnosed with Hashimotos and told all I could do is follow a healthy lifestyle, diet yoga ect., also have thyroid blood work done to monitor my levels, should they change than additional treatment would be necessary. I too have had many swallowing concerns, choking on small pieces of food. Recently in Jamuary I was at the emergency room for an infection and a cat scan revealed a mass of small nodules in the thyroid area, unrelated ro the infection, and I was told to follow up with my doctor. I have been without health insurance since Jan 2025. Thanks be to God, I will be insured in April thru my employer and will seek medical treatment. I wish you the best of health and will follow up with the treatment I will receive, if any and any additional information. One last note, when the Graves was active I lost a rediculous amount of weight in a very short time. I have since gained it back and would love to lose 20 pounds, other than that I feel pretty good. God bless and have a great day.

What was done about the nodules, was that looked into to see if any of them were cancerous? Or was that not looked at due to your insurance information. I am in the same boat, no insurance. I am on HCAP- financial assistance thru Cleveland Clinic. In the future, that might be something you might want to explore? Your medicine that you were on, how long did it take for you to start feeling better-less fatigue, more energy, etc....?

Last year, I lost around 20-25 lbs, not even trying! I have since gained my weight back. That is why I thought I had Graves Disease, but my Dr. says no it is Hashimoto's. Do you still have trouble swallowing? I am getting speech therapy and have exercises for my swallowing issues. I reached out to my Dr. about it and she said that the sore throat/difficulty swallowing isn't associated with Hashimoto's. I am wondering with the nodule, is maybe it is pressing on the esophagus or something else which is making it uncomfortable? She is telling me to talk to my PCP. I am headed to the ENT for being sick today, so I am going to mention it to my ENT Dr. and see what she says. I mostly have problems with liquids, occasionally with tough food like Steak or tough meats. I use a straw and that helps me. I burp a lot, think that is due to my hiatal hernia/acid reflux/heartburn. Thank you, that is great you are feeling better! God Bless you and you have a great day too!
