Knee replacement

Posted by angelacol @angelacol, Nov 19, 2021

I have been on oxytocin for almost 6 months due to my knee. I had replacement surgery and the pain is so bad. I can’t take anti-inflammatory due to my colitis. Don’t know where to do now. This is day 2

I had a double TKR on July 1st last year. What I am noticing is that my balance is still not where it should be. No pain or unusual stiffness. Is that normal this far out? I am trying out Brooks and ASICS stability shoes and I hope it will help. Has anyone worn these brands of shoes? Is anyone else having an issue with balance? Everything else seems to be fine. I spent 6 months in pre and post PT and still try to do my exercises at home. Any feedback would really be appreciated.

I wear brooks and keen arch support shoes. I told my pt the issues I was having with my balance after TKR and he worked with me to fix it, I just keep up the exercise regimen he had prepared for me at end of therapy. He educated me how important keeping up the exercise plan and I have been doing them as prescribed since my RTS in 2019 and my TKR IN 2021. You might consider getting back in to PT

@dmk Thanks for you reply. I was a little dismayed to hear that I may have to keep doing PT for the forseeable future. But if that's what needs to happen, I can do that. We are told very little about what to expect long term with knee replacements. I guess in some ways, it's better not to know and just do what you need to do. I actually went back to PT a couple of months ago and he gave me some exercises. I just need to be diligent and do them and hope it makes a difference.

Just remember joint replacements are not sprints but marathons. My therapist told me early on it takes 30 days where my exercise regimens at home would become habit. I always get them done first thing in the morning. Depending on the day, 1/2 hour on 3 days with two one hour days and one 2 hour day to complete give or take a few minutes here or there.

I just had total right knee replacement yesterday. I took JournVX. No pain. I know it is early days, but I’m feeling comfortable. Got a Spinal block and nerve block which will wear off soon. Tonight will be the test. Started PT today and again tomorrow. Then 3 times a week after that. Ice machine after PT and as needed to minimize swelling. Swelling= pain. Also leg squeezers to prevent deep vein thrombosis .

Which is why my surgeon has me essentially resting the first two weeks with lots of use of the ice machine which provides both icing and compression. Then my surgeon starts PT in the third week. Similar to the new HSS Quiet Knee protocol.

Interesting. I’m a PT veteran from many spinal surgeries so don’t question it. That said, I am doing it, but just barely. hardly have any movement, just baby steps. Up to but not inducing pain. I can’t let myself decline.

Not sure your situation is similar but I’m on JournVX, a non steroidal pain killer. Also Tylenol and Meloxicam. What is your pain regimen?

Also single pillow under the knee and ice as often as I can tolerate it.
