How long do the side effects of Lupron/Eligard last?
This Monday I am getting my number 3 and last injection of 6 month duration Eligard/Lupron. This is after 39 Proton Beam sessions which began 3 months after I was started on the 18 month protocol of ADT treatment.
My question is for those who have gone this route, how long after this last injection will I begin to get some relief from the medication? The hot flashes and perspiration seem to be the most obvious and prevalent side effect. Weight gain around the waistline and shrinkage of other body parts is noticeable but does not affect comfort as the perspiration accompanied by the hot flashes. I am really bothering my wife with the roller coaster movement of the air conditioning thermostat, up and down throughout the day...and night. lol
As I write this I get my last injection tomorrow and six months since the 2nd injection the hot flashes feel as bad as they did 6 months ago.

I had a Lupron injection April of 2023. My latest blood work showed that I'm still not producing testosterone Dr prescribed a testosterone gel that I put on every morning however I still get tired quickly get irritated quickly LOL thank God I haven't had a hot flash in 6 months so in my opinion I'm still suffering from side effects of the Lupron injection two years ago
Took Casodex and Lupron for three months, then Orgovyx for three more. Am now almost nine months past my last dose and still having side effects and low T. Of all the aspects of my treatment, this one makes me the angriest since I consented to something without being told all the SE's or that it could be permanent. Constant chills, no body hair, can only sleep 4-6 hours if I take massive amounts of various drugs, and anorgasmic 50% of the time (but at least I can fake it now that orgasms are dry).

4 ReactionsHi, all! I get my first Lupron shot this coming Friday. I am concerned about my ability to continue teaching piano. I teach in the student's homes and have about 23 weekly students currently. Anyone have an educated guess moving forward? I am concerned that side effects might be too often or dire enough to make the students uncomfortable, not to mention myself. I guess only time will tell, but if anyone has an educated guess, I would appreciate them. Thanks in advance!

I was on Lupron for six years. No one would’ve noticed any issues other than my having hot flashes. If you have that problem, we have a lot of answers to resolve it, but not everybody really has a serious Hot flash problem. There are a number of different drugs you can take that will stop the hot flashes. If you have a real problem with them, come back and ask about getting help. I have a bunch of doctor recommendations..
I ran a computer consulting company while on my first dose of Lupron. I had to troubleshoot network, Software and hardware issues for over 300 people. It had no effect on my ability to do that. I think that’s a little more complex than teaching somebody piano, Something you know intimately and doesn’t change.

Everyone is different! I am 83 years old and worked full time as an engineering consultant until 5 years ago. I have worked out hard most of my life but had quadruple bypass surgery 18 years ago. Started 44 rounds of radiation and Lupron about 10 months ago. My Lupron side effects were the worst I have heard of and I had to quit after 4 months of shots, but I was able to continue hard exercise workouts and feel that I could have continued my work if necessary. You will probably do fine but do not be afraid to get help from your doctor.

3 Reactions@pesquallie Thanks so much for your response! I deeply appreciate it! Currently, I am leaning towards surgery, but will fully make up my mind in a day or two, before my appointment for sure. Anyway, thanks again and God bless!

Jeff, I have been on Eligard for three months and one month on Orgovyx. The tiredness and fatigue are real. My mornings are difficult, but after lunch and a small nap I feel just fine for the rest of the day. I walk four miles, and do yoga every day. I alternate days of lifting weights and swimming with play pickle ball. As for work, I work I limit my time to 2 or 3 hours a day (computer related). I am 70 years old and have always been active. You do get tired, but grind through it. My PSA has gone from 15 to .1. So my answer is yes you can do your lessons, just figure out what time you have the most energy.

I was on Lupron for six years and Orgovyx For almost three years. I have never had a fatigue problem. I was on Zytiga for 2.5 years, it causes a lot of fatigue for some people, but never caused a problem for me. I do sleep about six hours a night, And occasionally, I will get tired in the afternoon and take a 25 minute nap, Timed by my phone. That keeps me up till shortly after midnight without fatigue. I don’t nap every day. I go to the gym three days a week and run a mile two times every day. I will go to the gym, spend an hour working out, come home do things for about a half an hour and then go run a mile.
These drugs affect people differently. Good to hear you don’t have the fatigue in the afternoon. I was working with a guy who was on Zytiga, He would wake up in the morning and then have to go back to sleep for three hours because he was so exhausted. I encouraged him to increase his prednisone to 10 mg, His doctor agreed, And that made a big difference in his fatigue.
Lupron in 2019 was the worst thing that ever happened to me until now. I was a high performing Technical Solutions Engineer and ended getting fired and my career ruined due to the side effects.
