Anyone had HALN for massive ADPKD kidney removal?
Even though the medical literature strongly advocates HALN for ADPKD kidneys up to 30 cm., I haven't yet found one surgeon willing to perform such on mine (at 27 cm.)?
Can anyone decrypt the disparity for me?

Dr. Mikel Prieto at Mayo did my HALN ( Hand Assisted Laproscopic bilateral nephrectomy)for PKD at living donor transplant 12/7/20. He pioneered the procedure. You must meet criteria to qualify. See Jolinda’s and others videos by Dr. Prieto.
Wishing you the best!

2 ReactionsMy surgeon at IU transplant said he was doing HALN and changed his mind the day before the surgery. My volunteer donor was there and I did not feel I had any options at that point. And didn’t think it would be too bad.
It was. The open surgery made recovery take months and months. There was a lot of pain. My scar extends from below my left rib to my right pubic bone - 12 inches. It cut through every ab muscle- so regaining core strength took years.
With my disease (PKD) I needed my second kidney removed a few years later, Dr. Prieto at Mayo in Rochester saw my scar and said he wished we had met before that surgery. So did I. He removed my second kidney with HALN and my recovery was short and relatively painless.
HALN is more difficult for the doctor but soooo much better for the patient. I would travel wherever you need to travel to have it done by someone who does it HALN. Dr Prieto is THE guy!

5 Reactions@gzr63 Welcome to Mayo Clinic Connect. Are you able to get to Dr. Prieto at Mayo Clinic? It sounds like he is the "go to" person!
Any surgical procedure has a criteria list that must be met for the best possible outcome. Sometimes we have one or two things that don't line up correctly, and must forego that route. Do you think that might be your situation?

2 Reactions@stephanierp Thank you for confirming my resolve! It's HALN; or "Larry" and "Randy" will "ride this pony" 'til he expires!
@gingerw Possibly (Rochester).
None of multiple robotic urologists has bothered to deliniate their contraindications vs. (their) preferences? Since I've obviously stated my preference, I presume it's irrelevant to theirs? All the published medical texts establish HALN as the current benchmark, even going back decades before current technology and revised/shared techniques.
@gzr63 I believe Dr. Prieto is indeed at Rochester campus! Here is a link you can go to, to request an appointment https://mayocl.in/1mtmR63
Please let me know what you find out, okay?
