5 mg of oxycodone for pain seems to cause anger and confusion

Hi
I am having trouble with my husband and his confusion , I believe, from taking oxycodone, He is getting confused and forgetful and also angry at me when I try to explain that I do not want to give him that medication anymore. It is really hard to deal with.
He has lung cancer and it spread to his bones , he has terrible back pain. I am told to give him a slow release morphine and a 5 mg of oxy when needed ,
When I do give him the oxy, it seems he gets confused and a bit obstinate.
I am not sure what to do - pretend to give him the oxy but don't ?

@pinsi cancer is scary - your feelings are very valid. it's good that they caught this new tumor early and have a treatment plan for you. good luck with radiation next week. do you have someone who can support you through your treatments?

Welcome to Mayo Connect @pinsi. You and @mamajite are right, cancer is scary! There is hope in catching things early, and hope in today's treatments. You've been through this before, but treatments and the management of treatment side effects have improved in those 30 years. Hopefully you find things have changed for the better.

@lls8000 thank you so much for that link...I neglected to mention that I also have COPD and that is another concern to me..My doctor could not really say if I will have difficulty with Radiation side effects, he was vague, I guess because he doesn't really know.....

@pinsi, as with any treatment, keep a close eye on how you are feeling, and speak up if you notice anything concerning, especially with your breathing considering the COPD. You'll get through this with the help of the nurses, docs, and us. 🙂

@lls8000 thank you for that...I start Radiation SBRT on Monday, and am thinking of questions to ask about possible side effects. For example, cough medicine, steroids, mucinex, inhalants..I have used all of these medications, inhalants prescribed daily, when experiencing upper respiratory infections. Also what kind of monitoring is done, I know ct scans but unsure about any kind of bloodwork..Thus far the only bloodwork I was required to do was for the bronchoscopy.. Would the Radiation Oncologist request monitoring bloodwork if there is such a thing..Any suggestions would be appreciated.. I plan to ask all of the above when I meet with Radiologist on Tuesday (2nd Radiation appointment) but may be missing something...thanks for your responses and encouragement..

@sipka how is your husband? Is he still on the oxy and now less confused. My husband 's dosage has been increased again alot, the pallative team are looking at patches now because of that. How are you coping now? I hold it together but sometimes it gets the better of me especially when I've had a lot of sleepless nights. I think of you often when I am feeling low, do hope you are ok.
