Chronic Back Pain for Years
6 back surgeries (extensive cervical and lumbar fusions) with neurological complications. Left with chronic pain. Accident happened in Nursing career 1992 and worked with first fusions until 1999 (failed fusions). At my age, and as a former nurse educator, I never wanted to had to rely on medication/s for the severe pain. Having thoroughly exhausted exploring sites using non-pharmaceutical methods, using psychological methods, biofeedback, trying to accept my limitations, i.e., I still believe somewhere...out there...is hope. The strong medicine has caused gastroparesis, further complicating my health problems. They are too numerous to write and I will not focus on them. I am looking for "help" and guidance. If I can be of assistance to anyone throughout their trials, (perhaps similar to some of what I have gone through), I will.

@lifetime, first, thank you for serving in the Armed Forces. Second, your MRI is very much similar to mine only mine involves L4, L5, S1, S2, and S3. And third, I totally agree with @lioness, @tennessegirl, and gailg, as shown below. I'm unfamiliar with VA rules, but are you old enough for medicare? If so, based on your MRI perhaps you can just find our own doctor without a referral. What you have been put through with the VA I find unforgivable. I go to my PCP. She no longer prescribes opiods. But she is working with me to do everything she can to help my back pain. I wish I could be of more help. But please don't give up, and please remember we are here pulling for you. Good luck. And please stay in touch with the group. @cognac
@lifetime Thank you for your service I live in a Sr. Build alot of veterans here One man got a civilian Dr.when he was very discouraged by the VA you can get a civilian Dr.there's no law says you cant I feel so sorry for you Just because you have serviced your our country doesn't mean you have to stay with the VA Wish you the best .
@lisalucier I was desperate to get off the opioids, so I was looking for everything I could think of to rehab my muscles. My husband's massages were the first step. He would put pressure on the spots I indicated and then try to push the knot out, following my directions. Once I was able to get in for a massage, the professional deep tissue massage was also very helpful at addressing the most painful knots. My husband went looking for other interventions and borrowed a tens unit and several vibrators. The tens unit helped only minimally and the vibrators not at all. He did pick up several types of Aspercreme, which is actually lidocaine and not aspirin. The Aspercreme patches worked the best for me. When I was finally released to begin physical therapy it was difficult to make any progress because of the intense muscle spasms and the therapist offered dry needling. The dry needling was what actually helped the most when combined with stretching exercises and ice. It was painful, but nothing near the continued pain I had been living with for months. Following the treatments there was so much relief over the next 2 to 3 days that I absolutely think it was worth the initial pain.
Now I am almost completely pain free every day and so grateful to be so. Stretching and walking are absolutely the best for me. I am so pleased to be able to report that I can now prepare a simple meal and walk 2000-3000 steps at a time. Just 2 short months ago I was almost bed bound. I still have weakness and fatigue, but am overall so much better and encouraged to keep improving.
@lifetime.... Ah...the VA. Don't let them intimidate you. You have the same rights and deserve proper care!! And let me say I completely understand how you feel. Like doing nothing...especially dealing with problems such as this...even going to the Dr. Surely you have someone to help you deal with this..to lean on provide ..mental support close to you!!! Don't let them intimidate you. I am here for you ..everybody on this website is here for you. Maybe another Veteran is reading this too. There are ways to send private messsages if someone reaches out...so you may find someone from your state on here. Problems w the VAare legendary should be the last place with problems getting treatment. Try not to get discouraged and don't give up
Thank you all, so deeply, with all my heart. I can't even begin to put into words how very grateful and comforted I feel to have found someone who truly cares!!
I do not know if I can ever find a way (out of pocket) for myself to see a doctor, but you know, it is a dream full of hope that I can work on every single day!
I next see my VA doctor in about 2 weeks. I will make sure and keep you updated!
I can't imagine eating, getting into my wheelchair, waking up and going to bed without unbearable pain. It is the very last thing I feel at night as I fight to get to sleep, and the first thing I am hit with that wakes me every single morning.
I just really feel for all of you who are having or have had very similar and even worst pain. How I wish I could help you!!!
@ cognac. She needs our support badly. I find it unforgivable as well. I hope she finds someone thru the group in her state also dealing w the VA! Thank you.
