Recovery from a unilateral oophorectomy

Posted by rufus444 @smiles444, Jan 1, 2019

I had a unilateral oophorectomy on November 27, 2018 and I am in pain in my pelvic area on the right side. The surgery was to remove a large cyst. This was done laproscopically and I thought I would be almost recovered by now. It has been 5 weeks. A section of my small intestine was affixed to the right abdominal wall and the doctor fixed that. I now have pain in my right side that comes from my pelvic area and goes down into my thigh. I feel a burning sensation and puffiness in my right abdomen. I am supposed to see the doctor next week. I am concerned that this could be abdominal adhesions or nerve damage. I am not sure if what Is happening normal or not normal. I have spoken to the nurses at the doctor's office but she does not seem concerned. I am concerned and I am not sure if this is normal or not. Has anyone else had complications after an oophorectomy? This surgery was done in Tallahassee. I am regretting having the surgery. I am in worse pain now than I was before.

I have this same issue except I had 4 ovarian torsions on both ends of a 13cm benign cystadeoma on my right ovary. They took the ovary left the tubes and other ovary and tube and where my ovary used to be is this intense dull ache (kind of like cramping) that I thought was associated with my period but it's all the time.
The only thing I could think of is remnants for your case and mine. Maybe a cyst was just forming again or not caught on the scan... make sure to keep advocating for yourself because docs tend to not believe women even female doctors! If you find out what the pain is drop a reply so we can know. I'll do the same. I'm about 3 months post op.

@alexxa88 how are you feeling now? Did you ever pinpoint the issue? I’m going through something very similar

Surgery was Jan. 22, 2026 for both ovaries and tubes. Also had cholecystectomy on Dec. 2, 2025 so recovery is from both. My digestive system is pretty reactive and wonder how long I will be dealing with diarrhea, gas pain and bloating.

My heart hurts for anyone going through this stuff! I had a robotic assisted abdominal full hysterectomy in July 2025 but she took everything including my tubes but left my ovaries only after she said they looked good. I struggled with cysts my whole life but she said they were fine. I ended up with an infection in my cuff and bladder retention a few weeks after but had to take antibiotics. I kept feeling dismissed when I talked about my pain I was having so I finally found another Dr and she did triggerpoint injections at 12 and 14 weeks because she found a very tiny piece of scar tissue inside but on the external part of my cuff that would make me jump when touched so sex was painful and I was in so much pain but I had started feeling like I was just complaining an a sissy. For a whole month I forced myself to push through and my job is very active. It was getting worse by the day waking up and going to sleep in pain. It was a constant ache and pulling in my pelvic area and then I had these random jolts of pain that would bring me to my knees. My husband finally sent me to the ER. After several tests, they found a 4cm hemorrhagic cyst on my right ovary. I ended up in emergency surgery the next day and they could not save my ovary. I had ovarian torsion from adhesions and what the scans did not show was the dense ormental scar tissue that had draped over my intestines that had everything balled up and had to be cut out. This surgery was in the beginning of November 2025. While the Dr was in there, she noted how backed up my intestines were. That is also something that had changed, I had went from extreme constipation to super soft and now to pretty much water diarrhea. I had a colonoscopy 6 weeks after my hysterectomy in July but it showed nothing. But my original surgeon said how backed up I was and then the second surgeon also noted the same. My bowels are so bad now that I strain to get the water out and at times, I can eat something and within 15 minutes it will run through me it seems. At one point, I had drank magnesium citrate and taken 290 mg linzess with warm prune juice and all it did was blow me up when I drank it at 6PM one night and the next morning, I could take a sip of water and throw up. I almost went to the ER but finally started slowly sipping Pedialyte with 15 doses of MiraLAX and it pushed straight liquid out. The pain in my lower abdomen and right side have gotten so bad that it’s so hard to walk. I have an area that had knotted up on my right side and I get the tugging , pulling and lightning jolt pains in my right side more but sometimes even in my left side but my belly button are is the worst. I just feel dismissed because they want to do so many tests and take so much money all while I’m suffering in pain. The gas and bloating is awful! My pelvic floor feels like it is pure raw even passing gas. Anyone else have similar? I’m just trying to figure out what way to go because this is affecting my daily life.
