Oral Lichen Planus food/drink triggers
Greetings!
I've just re-read EVERY post & response here re: OLP, and made a list of multiple meds and treatments that folks have found helpful. I am still searching for the one that will be helpful to me 🙁
I am currently doing Dry January, and was sure that completely removing alcohol (along with eating much healthier this month) would resolve my symptoms. However, this has not been the case and I'm immensely frustrated.
I am a pescatarian (basically vegetarian with seafood) and fresh fruits and veggies, along with grains and dairy are mainstays of my diet. I'm fairly devastated to hear that so many of you have reportedly had to give up many of these.
So, I'm curious to know WHAT foods and drinks have definitely caused issues for you. I'm ready to do a trial of no dairy, which will be a challenge. But giving up mushrooms and fresh fruit will be quite the challenge. I've already stopped anything minty, including cinnamon in my oatmeal, and spicy foods.
Thanks in advance for your input,
Holly

@rashida yes, just a drop on a Q-tip on my gums towards the back of my mouth. I do use one drop for each gum. I have a periodontal appointment in 2 weeks.
@kmm29 I had to stop all alcohol. So sad. Even one makes my lips tingle and mouth, tongue etc inflamed and sore. Have not figured out any of my food triggers. Out to dinner you never know. Done all other things like you but am on Plaquinil and after 6 months it has calmed down. When it calmed had one drink and all came back so. Can’t ever have another drink. Another idea was no coffee. Went to decaf and seems to help. Hopefully this helpful.
@kjoeme1978 I did a dry January and was sure my mouth would improve dramatically, but it has not. Instead of red wine I was making a blend of cherry and pomegranate juice mixed with water and then I discovered those juices are extremely acidic. I think acidic foods are a huge trigger for me as well as anything even mildly spicy. I've been drinking low acid coffee with chicory mixed in and it doesn't seem to be causing a problem.
But my current flare up is one of the worst I've had right now and I am completely baffled as to what is causing it. Other than stress, I definitely have stress.
@hem1959 that seems about right … you are using Lyderm Gel 0.05% once or twice a day, right? The tube should look like this - or at least have the same information as mine is bought in Canada.
If your prescription was filled in the States, the package/tube may look like this …?

@kmm29 - Good morning. I was on dexamethasone rinse but the pharmacy said it is no longer available. I checked with a couple just to make sure I was getting correct information. What area of the country do you live? I'm in Alabama. Since I can get dexa... I rinse with hydrogen peroxide and immediately rinse with water. My gums are at a point that it will burn a little but the water rinse settles that down. In the past when my gums were in worse condition I could mix half and half HP and water, then rinse with just water. Good luck.
@hem1959 - I keep a list of the ph levels (acid or alkaline) of fruit, etc. in our kitchen. If I want to eat or drink something and don't know the ph level, I refer to my list. My most recent flare was when I drank "Propel" to rehydrate. It is loaded with citric acid. It was powerful. I did not even look at the ingredients before drinking it. My bad for sure. Citric acid is added to a lot of food products as a preservative and it accelerates the ph in the product.

2 Reactions@rashida I attached a photo of what I am using. And my instructions say to use two to three times a day. But my gums are now bleeding worse than they were before so I will take a couple day break and then go back to using it just once a day.

1 Reaction@fdixon63 Good morning, I am in Virginia. My understanding about hydrogen peroxide is that it kills all bacteria including good bacteria, and for this reason it should only be used for initial cleansing of a wound. I think I find the most relief by rinsing with a warm solution of sea salt and xylitol. But if you have pets, make sure the Xylitol stays well Out Of Reach of them... it is highly toxic to dogs and probably cats as well.

1 ReactionHi, For my OLP I do not eat or drink anything that stings, burns etc...even if it happens one time!! Fruit, spicy foods, foods that take more chewing, vegetables that sting even one time etc... even things like avocado, bananas, yogurt with fruit, hard candies that have any roughness to them etc..... I am extremely careful when I get swelling in my mouth. Chewing causes my teeth (molars) to rub against the inside of my cheeks otherwise it gets worse. I eat Chobani vanilla yogurt every day and some cheeses and eggs. I am also a peskatarian and eat seafood. I eat a lot of vegetables that get softer after cooking, a lot of cooked cauliflower and carrots with butter. The only alcohol I drink is a clean beer brewed with simple pure ingredients from a local brewery. No dark beers, sour beers or beers with fruit.
When I have flare-ups I use Dexamethasone rinse for only ten days. This helps.
I also have Esophageal Lichen Planus which is incredibly rare and LP on my skin. For the ELP I do need to go into the surgery center every few months to have my esophagus stretched as much as possible. I now have precancerous tissue in my esophagus and have biopsies done each time my esophagus is stretched. The LP on my skin has been in remission for over a year.
Emotional stress definitely causes flare-ups in my mouth without a doubt.
Considering all of this, I do very well!! I am very optimistic and have a positive attitude!! I spend a lot of time with friends and doing things I am happy doing. I stay busy!!! Life is good!!!
As ironic as this sounds, I worked as an Oral Surgical assistant for 25yrs! I loved my job.❤️

1 Reaction@fdixon63 Hey, I am in Vermont. It came in 5 little 30ML bottles. (although when I googled it I see larger bottles)
Why would they not provide the same meds all over. I wonder if you could do mail order. I've never tried hydrogen peroxide. Just salt/bakingsoda.
