Post treatment for SCC tongue cancer following 7 weeks radiation

Thanks for your input everyone. It helps to know that everyone is different with the outcome and healing. My husband is much improved today, but we are back at square one with him learning to eat again. Pureed foods, thickened liquids, small sips, and make sure he does the exercises along with swallowing the proper way with the left chin tuck, etc. So yes, 1 step forward and 2 back. It sucks and I pray that he can overcome this major setback and can get through this. As his sole caretaker, it's hard on me too. I cared for my dad until he passed in 2024, caring for my mom who is in assisted living and now my husband. Although I'm not a nurse, I have gained numerous nursing skills to assist everyone in my life, but I AM TIRED! I have a great support group for myself also and I am taking advantage of the time that he is in the hospital for R&R for myself. I appreciate everyone's thoughts.

@sharooni Hello and Im glad you were able to hear from others that your husband's issues are similar and can improve. Because my radiation was aimed at my ear, I did not have swallowing problems like throat cancer. I had mucositis and the oral ulcers were very painful but by about 3 weeks after the end of radiation, there was a hint of improvement.
It sounds like your husband needs to do his swallowing exercises consistently and no one can do this for him. As a caregiver I found that my input was not always appreciated by my husband, but he listened better to the nurses, etc. Some men are like that. Reminders are all you can do.
It is good that you have a support system to help take care of you. When friends ask What can I do? you can ask for an hour or two where they could sit and visit with your husband so you can get out of the house. You must take care of yourself to be able to care for him. Keep on going and encourage him that it does get better as long as he follows directions. Be strong. You both can get through this.

Hola @sharooni , yo me operé hace ahora 16 años dé un cáncer dé lengua en la parte derecha dé la misma él tumor era bastante importante ( estadio lV y me tuvieron qué dar también 35 sesiones dé radioterapia y tres dé quimioterapia y té puedo contar qué antes dé aplicarme el tratamiento podía comer alimentos blandos con un poco dé dificultad pero podía pero a partir dé qué me empezaron a dar las sesiones dé radioterapia empecé a tener problemas dé deglución y tenía qué alimentarme con líquidos y purés así fui pasando los días haber si poco a poco podía ir mejorando, también tenía dolores en toda la boca debido a la radiación, bien pues después dé todo esto una vez qué termine él tratamiento estuve unas semanas bastante fastidiado hasta que conseguí recuperarme un poco pero en cuanto a la alimentación nunca conseguí alimentarme con alimentos sólidos ni siquiera blandos pero sí podía comer cualquier comida triturada y yogures flanes natillas agua zumos y fui acostumbrándome a este tipo dé alimentación y me sentía fenomenal dé ánimos y dé ganas dé hacer vida lo más normal posible también podía hablar bastante bien y todas las personas me entendían perfectamente, así fui llevando mí vida días tras días y años tras años con la alergia dé ver qué aunque tenía mis carencias para hacer una vida completa como lo hacía antes dé operarme al menos me podía relacionar con familiares y amigos.
Sin embargo hace aproximadamente cinco años la cosa empezó a cambiar para mal pues los efectos secundarios dé la radioterapia a largo plazo son terribles ya empecé a tener serías dificultades para tragar y empecé a perder peso pues la alimentación era bastante deficiente al no ingerir los nutrientes necesarios hasta que hace dos años tuve una neumonía por aspiración y me tuvieron que ingresar para su curación y los doctores me dijeron qué tenían qué ponerme una sonda debido a una disfagia importante y era la única forma dé poder alimentarme tuve la sonda puesta vía nasofaríngea un mes hasta que me operaron para ponerme la sonda en el estómago a través del vientre había perdido 15 kilos en poco tiempo pero con la alimentación a base dé batidos normoprotreicos y calóricos a fecha dé hoy he recuperado 14 dé los 15 que perdí, mí alimentación consiste en tomar 1250 ml por día en cinco tomas dé 250 ml y entre medias 150ml dé agua para estar bien hidratado.
Por tanto os recomiendo que tengáis mucha fuerza mucho ánimo y mucha paciencia sí todo va más o menos bien sé puede llevar la vida lo mejor posible dentro dé las dificultades qué nos ha tocado.
Espero y deseo que tú marido sé recupere lo mejor posible.

@jubilta77 I thank you for your response. You are definitely a strong, determined person! I hope and pray that my husband strives to continue to heal and beat this awful disease and treatment. He know now that he didn't follow the proper protocol and he is working hard to do so now. Lesson learned with his pneumonia. Prayers and continued healing to you.

@sharooni igualmente le deseo a tú esposo está enfermedad nos hace sufrir pero es como una guerra qué hay qué ganar batalla a batalla y para mí lo más importante es qué he estado 15 años al lado dé mis hijos y mí mujer y he visto crecer a mis nietos y disfrutar al máximo dé ellos.
Transmitele a tú esposo mis mejores deseos para una buena recuperación.

@sharooni You don't have to just use the formula recommended by the nutritionist. My understanding is you can add additional calories beyond the formula. Maybe ask them what you can add. I was able to maintain my weight with the formula. Swallowing is more challenging for some of us. I learned the chin tuck and that worked great for me. I made tapioca pudding in my crockpot (Pinterest) and that was one of my first happy foods. Warm foods and drinks worked better for me ...still do 2 years out.

Please Google search “Stanford Health Care Head & Neck Oncology Speech & Swallowing Rehabilitation”…I used the prescribed exercises to strengthen my throat and neck muscles that was really helpful during & after my radiation treatment. Towards the end of my treatment period I did switch to a liquid diet for 7-10 days but otherwise was able to eat solid foods…and 14 days after radiation I ate steak and salad.
Hope that this information is helpful and wanted to share it with the community as something that worked for me.

@albion223 Hola, dime sí actualmente sigues siendo capaz dé comer sólidos aunque sean blandos y como lo has hecho. Porque yo qué llevo ya 16 años desdé él tratamiento con radioterapia no puedo alimentarme ya por boca aunque los primeros meses posteriores al tratamiento también podía comer alimentos sólidos pero dieta blanda pero como consecuencia dé los efectos secundarios dé la radioterapia él problema se fue agrandando debido a la fibrosis cicatricial hasta llegar ha hace poco más o menos cinco años en qué me tuvieron qué ingresar por una neumonía por aspiración y a partir dé entonces mí alimentación es por sonda gástrica.
Sí tú recuperación a medio y largo plazo es buena entraré en ésa página qué recomiendas.
Una pregunta: cuanto tiempo llevas desdé que terminastes él tratamiento? Gracias y te deseo lo mejor.
