SIBO…did it ever go away?
Hi everyone. Very long story short I recently came back from the Mayo pain rehabilitation program for chronic pain from IBS for the last few years. My question is: while going to many doctors for a diagnosis I did test positive for SIBO. The doctor didn’t think it was the cause of my symptoms however we wanted to treat it of course. I did two rounds of the antibiotic that they often give for SIBO. I was never retested and I never felt any different after the antibiotic. Is it possible that it never went away and could be contributing to my IBS symptoms? Thanks so much for your help! I know you’re not all doctors but would love opinions. Thanks.

@hallward I paid for the nutritionist out of pocket. Medicare only covers for certain diagnoses. Fodzyme powder costs around $65 but lasts a long time.
I was diagnosed with SIBO finally. I was given Rifaximin but once I went off, the symptoms returned. The cause of SIBO is a bacteria. Treating the symptoms does nothing once you stop the treatment. It was explained to me that the upper and lower GI tract have different bacteria that is normal. But if the lower GI tract bacteria migrate to the upper GI, problems occcur. My doctor put me on a prebiotic and probiotic. I changed my diet with the help of her nutritionist. I also switched to a low acid coffee called Lifeboost that you can purchase online. I omitted dairy, gluten and sugar. I continue with gluten free products, substituted with sheep or goat milk products and nut milks. And I am very careful with sugar - use stevia instead to sweeten coffee and tea. Check any products I buy for sugar content and keep it to 10% or less. My SIBO has not returned in the past couple of years.
I wish everyone the best - I know that dealing with SIBO is difficult.

I would also like to know the digestive aid you use before meals.
@ttheo I am pretty sure simethicone will only help your body move the gas through you. It should help relieve the discomfort from cramping and spasms (it helps me), but I don’t think it will reduce the gas or odor.
I had a Whipple procedure two years ago and continue to deal with bloating, cramps, spasms, and other GI issues. I am doing the SIBO breath test tomorrow to see if that is a contributing factor.

5 ReactionsHello @jenatsky, thank you for your note, and processes you have tried, without positive results.
Whereas I am in the same boat as you and many others, I hope someone replies with processes that actually help reduce or eliminate S.I.B.O.
A nutritionist, per @hallward, is my next attempt.
Thank you All!!!

3 Reactions@catchercoach8 Essentially I cut out the foods and spices identified as medium and high using the FODMAP app until I was relatively normal. Then with guidance of nutritionist I added them back one at a time until I could determine which food items were still bad. For these I sprinkle Fodzyme powder on the culprit item(s) before consuming it. Some items that contain HFCS as an example I completely ignore. Good luck

1 Reaction@catchercoach8 I don’t think SIBO can be cured like an infection, you just need to learn how to adjust your diet to help maintain your healthy GI homeostasis. It’s how I’m dealing with it at least. Some foods I will just not eat like those containing garlic or onions.

@jenatsky
I also take this. Does it help? Who knows.
