Radioactive blue dye injected to the breast for lymph node dissection

Posted by Glori @elvandi, Apr 25, 2017

Has anyone had this radioactive dye injected tracer before surgery to see if cancer in the lymph nodes. I understand it is very painful and since I was told this would be done for me before I have the lumpectomy removed in my breast. I, want to know more about it. Hope someone can advise me.

I had the dye injection a few yrs ago. Just before surgery they drew an X mark beween my fingers on the hand they were doing surgery on. They injected the dye after I was under anesthesia, so I didn't feel anything, don't recall any soreness after surgery. Hope yours goes as smoothly as mine did. Good luck and God bless you.<br>

I had the dye injection through my nipple it was the most pain I've ever felt in my life,my doctor did not brief me before the injection,i was very very angry ,when i saw her before sugery i told her i was very mad and i was about to go nigi warrior on her, then i went under, lucky for her! .
When i went back for follow up i brought it to her attention and asked her why she didn't warn me and she said if i told my patient's they may not have it.
That was her only responce ,and she's probably right.
I hate that you have to have it ,please take a nerve medication before .
As soon as it was over i ask for one and they got me one. They were very aplogic.
Good luck it's necessary, your be fine.

I'm so sorry. I know that was excruciating. I didn't realize you were having the blue dye injected in the breast, i thought it was the hand. I apologize, i didn't intend to mislead you.

The blue dye was injected thru the IV, it was the 4 injections of the Radioactive Tracer that is injected around the breast area. Was not to painful , I got thru it. Anyway, the surgery was successful with no cancer cells in the Lymph nodes. The breast lump was removed. Things are good for me and I am blessed.

Thanks, also, did you need to have chemo and radiation afterwards ? My lump was 3 cm, so it would get both treatments.

I had 5 injections of the dye before my wire located lumpectomy. The surgeon marked the spots right above the nipple where the radiologist injected the dye. They injected the dye shortly after they had inserted the wires into the tumor, so I was still numb and didn't feel a thing. I had the best surgeon and caregivers. They took such great care of me.

Wondering what cancer center you were treated at ? Can you share that info ? Also, once the lump was removed did you have chemo and radiation necessary ? I recently had the lumpectomy and it was 3mm (about 1"), will need both treatments.

After lumpectomy (20mm, grade 3) I only had radiation. By the way 3mm is about 1/10 of an inch. Did you mean 30mm?

sorry, I meant 3 CM, which is about 1 1/8" size. The cancer was touching the margin , so therefore I will need a little more removal (2nd surgery), and that became stage 2A, which will need both chemo and radiation. What was the reason you did not have to have chemo ? Did you have an oral medication to take in place of chemo ?
