Transdermal HRT

Posted by vkmov @vkmov, Oct 19, 2023

Many studies have found that transdermal HRT protects and builds bone without all the horrific side effects of many first-line osteoporosis treatments. The patch bypasses the liver and thereby avoids the risks of breast cancer, strokes, etc. Has anyone explored this or discussed it with their doctors?

This sounds most like a Prolia reaction. Prolia has listed side effects of necrosis of the jaw and osteonecrosis of the external auditory canal (bone death/breakdown in the ear canal.
This may be exaceberated by steriod use, but the Prolia really seems to be the problem.
I am so sorry that you are going thru this reaction. I was lucky I just couldn't take the osteoporosis drugs which we prescribed. My friend who was fracturing and stopped after she began strontium citrate says that we won the bone lottery.
You might try strontium citrate; it is an earth mineral found in most ground water and food; we just take it at therapeutic dose level of 680mg nightly.

@kathleen1314 Hi, Kathleen. Glad u found something which helped. A reference i made about water is i guess i figured it was ground water accessible. … I give myself B12 injections. Dr refuse vit D injections. I asked perhaps at great local veterinary college? Ha! There are some stand alone various infusion ceneters for various health items. I am concerned about quality control. NP said go try it and let her know what happens w the Vit D infusion. No thanks. I did have Thorne Vit D liquid I used which began tomake a difference but cant take enough. In a year ii raised Vit D level few points. From 18 to 22. Not all medical is equal nor available as needed and it is lessened in quality and quantity in some ways. Need to find help elsewhere. Best to you two snd thanks for insights!

I am going to talk to my endocrinologist about HRT. I am 62 (13 years postmenopausal) and have used the creams from BioLabs Pro (Estradiol/Estriol and Progesterone). I would like to go on a transdermal patch or other low dose treatment. Can members share the products they are on and doses?

@gravity3 I am just starting to speak to a clinic about the pellets. I am 68 and fear that the pellets might not work for me, as no way to adjust dose once it's in. Did you have any side effects or need adjustments?

@blueberre

No side effects. My functional medicine provider started me at the smallest amounts and moved me up slowly. I started on estradiol cream and patch with compounded testosterone cream. Then I transitioned to pellet.... estradiol and testosterone
Progesterone also.

@gravity3 Thank you for the explanation. I questioned the functional Dr. about jumping right into the pellets. She didn't seem very responsive to my cream suggestion at the time. I have an appointment in the upcoming weeks and will stand my ground on starting with patch and creams and if all goes well, then pellets.

@amriv , I’m same age as you. I’m on transdermal patch .05 mg, with 100 mg progesterone every third night. I’ve been on HRT for about 1.5 years and am still slowly modifying the dose to find the right combo of estradiol and progesterone.

My primary care doc believes in testing blood serum levels, which is why we keep modifying. Some docs don’t believe in testing (like my endocrinologist). If we weren’t testing, I would have settled on a different dose long ago— probably .0375 patch with 100 progesterone nightly.

Good luck. HRT has been a good experience for me.

I was started on HRT at 69 due to hot flashes at night that woke me up so I was not sleeping for years. I’m active and my doctor made sure my heart numbers were good and did a heart scan which was 0. I was started on 0.25mg Estradiol patch and 100 mg of progesterone orally. I’m sleeping much better and I hope it also helps my bones. I have borderline osteoporosis. Do your research, there is a lot of new information regarding pellets and the use of testosterone which is not approved by the FDA.

@amriv I am on 14 mcg Menostar and 50 mg progesterone cream and vaginal estradiol. I am 75 and 20 years past menopause. I had to go to a functional physician to get the Menostar and progesterone cream. My urologist prescribed the the vaginal estradiol.
