Patellar femoral joint replacement after previous partial knee replace

Posted by msauercraft @msauercraft, Jan 28 8:50am

I have had a partial knee replacement knee replacement 10/24. Now I am told in need patella femoral joint replacement. Bad arthritis under kneecap. Surgeon said he would have to take out partial knee and do a full knee.
Can someone just get the patella femoral replacement after a partial knee??

I just had a Patellafemoral arthroplasty without involving any other part of the knee.

Are you able to go see a second opinion surgeon? My first one said my knee was as good as it will ever be. My second opinion offered me the patella replacement.

I am so glad I got the second opinion!

If you have bad arthritis the surgeon is probably trying to prevent you from needing a third revision when the last compartment goes.

I agree with @steveinarizona - depending on your age and how fast your arthritis is advancing, there might not be much there to salvage given continued arthritic deterioration, so how many more surgeries are you willing to go through? But do get a 2nd opinion if you have doubts because you want to be sure you are making the right choice.

We have the same concern, mostly. I had TKR 12/24 that was “not right or not complete” as nothing was done for the patella.
Though not knowing it could be a patella problem I did look for a 'second opinion' and is so doing found a GREAT surgeon. He spotted the basis of my problem in 2 minutes just looking at my knee. X-rays confirmed it. So we're considering repairing my patella. Next Sunday I’ll get an MRI so we can plan details as necessary.
And since the patella rides on the femoral surface of your replaced part of your knee (assuming it was the femoral head replaced) a “replacement” patella should be good to consider.
You and my situation got me to searching for good info. I found these sites to be most helpful for me. For your consideration:

Good research. We all need to take ownership of our medical situations.

Is the surgeon who is now recommending that you take out the partial, the same surgeon that installed the partial?

@shark yes.
I am looking for other opinions. Will actually check Mayo, too
Mayo fixed my husbands leg when everyone here wanted to amputate

@msauercraft All of the Mayo surgeons are exceptional, IMO, but Dr Pagnano particularly specializes in partial knee replacement. If I were you, I would seek his opinion.
