Multiple BMs every day

Posted by 44annie @44annie, Apr 28, 2024

A year ago I had a sigmoid colonectomy. Within weeks I was having 15 BMs/day. I’ve been to 4 GI docs, had a colonoscopy, enteroscopy, camera endoscopy, 2 MRIs, and a host of meds from Imodium (>impacted fecal matter), Linzesse, to Steroids; the latter two resulted in diarrhea. The only med that helps is Mesalamine, an anti-inflammatory, down to 8-10 BMs/day.
They are fully formed, often clustered, often 3:30am, 3:45, 4…
My PCP/GI has ruled out ischemic bowel disease and IBS.
I haven’t read about anyone else having so many. The only test left is a small bowel balloon endoscopy but it is risky at my age (80) and because I have many adhesions on my intestines.
I’d appreciate any help.

Hi I just read your text from a few years ago. I’ve had a problem with frequent bowel movement since Summer 2023. Sometimes 8 Bm a day. Not normal for me. I have gotten no diagnosis and on 3 rd GI. Have had every test that is normal.
One thing I just had was an abdominal X-ray. The GI was checking to see if I had stool sticking to my colon. She said this is a problem when diarrhea will come from over the stuck stool and present as diarrhea
I don’t know if they talked to you about that?
I had this X-ray a few weeks ago and they didn’t see this on me.
Just wanted to pass this information on

@soup1951 - thanks for mentioning this idea for @rasmst about the potential of stool sticking to the colon.

What is the GI planning to check on or treat next for you, soup1951?

I’m getting to the end of the line as far as tests go. I’m on my 3rd GI doctor. And will look for a 4th. Nothing has changed with the frequent BM. The last thing is I’ve taken a medication I need. I’ve taken it for 50 years. Just wonder if it has affected my intestines after so many years? It is a med not commonly used so I doubt pharmacist have done research on it ?

@soup1951 So the “stuck stool” prevents the “food” from being solidified? It can’t contact the bowel to have fluids extracted. I hadn’t heard of that. Thank you. Feel better.

My understanding is the stuck stool is attached on one side of the colon. So it would be like a partial damm
Then for some reason , the loose type stool behind the partial damm would spill over past the stuck stool.
So you experience diarrhea, but you also have somewhat constipated stool that is stuck on the wall
I had an abdominal X-ray to look for it. But my X-ray was normal.

I just wanted to add my experience with the stool stuck to the side of the colon….I had incontinent bm’s several times a day yet I was constipated…! It was horrible. Took laxatives for 23 days (various ones and doses) and had a clean out for a colonoscopy. Since then, I’m trying my best not to be in that situation again. So I read all these posts hungrily and I’m thankful for all the golden Nuggets of information that may help. I too have increased my fiber, although I did gradually because I have diverticulitis as well as microscopic colitis. I’m on Budesonide long-term. Praying for all those who need it!

@annpeters Interesting! Because my abdominal X-ray didn’t show the stuck stool , I’m not sure of what treatment I would have had for it?

@annpeters I’ve never heard of Budesonide before? What does it do and do you have any side effects ?

@soup1951 Budesonide is a steroid that supposedly is absorbed by the gut only rather than say the lungs. It stops inflammation. So far, I haven’t experienced any side effects. I purposely did not read about them because I didn’t want to subconsciously think I was experiencing them.

Only been tuning in for about 4 months, off and on. My opinion and $5.00 will get you a Starbucks. But here it is. I monitor most groups. I think that among “Connectors”, Poop Issues (or “issuing” too little, too much). How to constrain or release it to a “normal” regular movement. May we hear from ordinary, uncomplicated pooping. What is it like? Can you eat most anything and still be normal? Do you know how lucky you are? 🙂

To finish up my observation, pooping I think, is second only to: “A sudden viselike pain in my chest. Any ideas?”
- - - -
“Well, do you live in Chicago? Are you upright? Notice a reddish effluence? You shot? Suggest make doctor appointment- - - Hello?”

Kidding: CHEST PAIN, especially radiating to left arm, jaw - get to ER. Why take a chance?

Hi 44annie
I just have several loose but not liquid BM's per day. I am now scheduled to have a test called Anorectal Manometry next month which consists of using fleet emema followed by inserting baloon and measuring strength of muscles that control BM's. I'm anxious to hear the results and recommendations are. Is this the same thing you decided to skip? I'm 79.
Don

Hi Don! I’m just now seeing these posts. I’m wondering how your test went since that’s the next step for me. I have 12-15 soft, formed BMs a day but they’re 1-3, 1” pieces most times. Sometimes I have a much longer piece.
