Ladies: How are you managing vaginal atrophy as you age?

Posted by HomeAgainLA @llynch17056, Sep 21, 2023

TO THE LADIES ONLY: As I got older I started developing vaginal atrophy. Then I started developing open splits on my labia that were extremely painful. I went to urgent care one weekend and was prescribed vaginal estrogen medicine. It did the trick but I didn’t want to use estrogen. I went to a GYN that recommending organic coconut oil to use externally only. This was a few years ago and it has worked perfectly. I have never had another problem. At all. I wanted to pass along a natural inexpensive solution to vaginal atrophy.

@beanlisa56 Totally agree, and let’s not forget our bones which rely on estrogen to maintain density and prevent osteoporosis, which is no fun at all!! Please speak with GYN if you are on the fence with the estrogen issue.

@sharonba AND, I do all my own yard work and house cleaning (inside and outside) not to mention other heavy duty work. What my doctors told me works for me.

@greengold I certainly don’t have all the answers about incontinence. Is some of it DNA? Don’t know. I just know that I’m entering my 13th year doing gentle yoga which includes a lot of core exercise, balance exercise and Kegle exercises and, so far, I am not incontinent. My friends that don’t do yoga are. I may become incontinent tomorrow. But, I have noticed that a lot of the class has the same exercises recommended for incontinance and core strengthening.

@llynch17056 Thanks, I'll look into yoga!

@jmfaith That's what I do. I started with 2x week and I found 3x week much better. No dryness at all anymore and I am 70 and I have never had a UTI, or any urinary issues. What we need to remember is that vaginal estradiol is not jus for our vaginas, but the cream also gets absorbed by our urinary/bladder area (not sure exactly how - but I do believe perhaps our vagina and bladder perhaps share a wall in there? 😀

@beanlisa56 Maybe I've asked this already and can't remember. It's a long thread! What delivery method are you using for your vaginal estrogen: Vagifem/Yuvafem, Imvexxy or cream? How often?

@llynch17056
So is it helpful to use vagifem (estradiol) ?
Seems to be a conflict, but I'm not sure. I have bladder incontinence, I do twice daily Keigle (sp?) exercises, but it seems to be getting worse. I hike with a group, so it can be inconvenient and even embarrassing. Help!

@greengold

using estrace (estradiol) twice a week, it helps a little but the game changer is botox injected into the bladder by a urogynecologist. Covered by Medicare. First one lasted five months, then got another one. Not painful. You are numbed up beforehand, and you don’t feel the numbing. My urogynegologist office also gave me a handout of a few bladder retraining exercises. Aazing what our mind can do. Nothing huge or difficult. You may want to check this out!

@pb50 yet another reason to not use hormone creams in your vagina.

I have used VagiFem for more than 20 years. It works, though expensive.

@mannism How often do you use Vagifem?

@blueskies1530 I don’t use VagiFem. I only use organic coconut oil.

Yes coconut oil is great for comfort and for sex. But and here's the biggest but, it does not stop the vaginal tissues from thinning like estrace does. It also prevents UTIs which is very important as we age. Very little gets absorbed systemically

@sharonba my GYN is the one that told me not to use it, to use coconut oil instead. She is relatively young, has outstanding credentials, and is at the renown Woman’s Hospital here in BR where they are cutting edge. I have had such a great result with her advice, I am not questioning it. I am 78, I don’t have UTIs, I am not incontinant, I average 8,000 steps a day, just started resistance training, have great balance and volunteer for a litter removal non-profit. I am sticking with it. I will not use hormones on or in my body.

@llynch17056 good for you you do not need estrogen. Statistics show that Approximately 50% of women over age 50 will experience an osteoporosis-related fracture due to postmenopausal estrogen loss, with roughly 1 in 3 women affected by the condition overall. Within the first 5-10 years of menopause, women can lose up to 25% of their bone mass. This leads to fractures, chronic pain, and immobility. This is a serious condition that will affect the rest of these women’s lives. Everyone should make an informed decision re: Estrogen therapy. It’s not for all, but it is for many.

@sharonba I probably do “need” estrogen. I also “need” statins whichI don’t take. I always weigh the benefits against the risk. If I wanted to sit in a recliner all day eating unhealthy processed food I’d probably need a lot of drugs to stay alive, but I choose careful eating and exercise. I am 78 years old. At the last high school reunion I was in the 1% of very healthy active people. Others not so much. A lot of those take drugs instead of being responsible for their health. Now, before you and others go nuts over that statement, I do believe you must take drugs for certain conditions and disabilities that you cannot help with diet and life style, but a lot of conditions can be improved through diet and life style. It’s not the easy way, but it’s the way I chose. Comparing myself with the others from my high school class of 1965, I would say that I’m on to something good. I take thyroid meds. I cannot improve my thyroid function through diet and life style so I take them.
