Anyone experience pain with Y90 treatment?

@marthawyatt I have neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer that has spread to my liver. I have not had Y90, but I follow liver treatments for future reference. Some of the comments aren't relevant to your concerns, but I think there is enough sharing from other Y90 treatment patients, that they are worth a quick look. Did you find anything valuable?

I see you are in Turkey, my good friends husband is Turkish and we all teach at the local university and I have also met several lovely Turkish people through NATO.

My husband had y-90 this year to his liver. It worked. He started complaining of severe arm and shoulder pain. Turns out it was near the gastric nerve causing referred pain in the arm and shoulder. It was much more painful than anticipated and he did not feel fully prepared. His shoulder pain lasted for 2 months. All pain and any side effects did subside after 3 months.

I am not in Turkey. Turkey is a nickname that I have had since I was a little kid. Sorry to disappoint you.

Hello @melissasledge1 and welcome to Mayo Connect. I appreciate you sharing the side effects that your husband had after his Y-90 treatment, and that the side effects were short-term. I'm sure the three months of pain were difficult for him, though.

You said that the treatment worked. Could you share a bit more? For example, did it reduce the size of the liver tumors? Is he feeling better? How is his appetite?

Ive had Y90 two times Only side effect I had was a lil sleepiness besides that nothing Easiest proceedure so far in this cancer journey. and the tumors are all dissolved

Hello; New to this group, and new to this unwelcome journey.

My husband was diagnosed with cancer of the liver on Christmas Eve, 2025 and had Y-90 treatment at UNC Chapel Hill, NC, this past Tuesday. We were dreading the possible side effects but so far, he hasn’t experienced any. They sent him home with pain medication, nausea medication and a course of steroids, and I’m so pleased that his appetite is still intact and he is on his feet multiple times throughout the day. I think the steroids have helped him a lot, because he has been awake more than weak and sleeping (which wasn’t the case leading up to the treatment). In searching online information, we were very anxious about the unknown of this treatment, and very anxious about its outcome. I understand he may face these side effects, if additional treatments are needed. Thank you, for allowing me to participate in the group, and best wishes for everyone on this journey!

@marthawyatt Would love a follow up. Y90 on 1/14/2026 for cancer that spread from esophagus to the liver and after two weeks same type of concerns. Difficulty swallowing, lost 30 pounds in three weeks, unable to keep food or water down, not able to sleep for more than a couple of hours.
