Anyone experience urethral stricture after prostatectomy?

Posted by risa6069 @risa6069, Jan 9 12:31pm

Got a urethral stricture 6 weeks post op near the end of the penis (at the Fossa Navicularis) which I think is due to the catheter insertion or use. Causes slow urine flow. Anyone else experience this or can share how it was treated? So far just had dilation but recurred.

Interested in more discussions like this? Go to the Prostate Cancer Support Group.

Do a web search on this “ Got a urethral stricture how can it be treated?”

Definitely comes up with the fact that dilation usually has reoccurrence and that surgery is the normal solution.

Surgical options you probably are also aware of
urethrotomy (cutting scar tissue with a laser/scalpel) to more definitive surgical procedures like urethroplasty (removing scar tissue and rebuilding the urethra).

Must admit this is the first time I’ve ever heard of this occurring in this location.

Thanks Jeff. Done the usual searches but just looking if anyone has any personal experience of this. Seems only a small % get it. Can be linked to using too large a catheter. (Std is size 18 I believe)

@risa6069 I had stricture at junction of bladder and urethra due to excessive straining on the toilet.
Wire fulguration did the trick and so far🤞it’s been good.
Yours is in an odd place but who knows? I think they excise the tissue and put a stent in place to direct tissue growth ‘around’ the surgical site. Best,
Phil

Thanks Phil. Suspect due to damage caused when catheter fitted. Seems to happen ocassionally. More regular at bladder neck closer to surgery like yours. Glad your issue resolved ok. R

I know your reply here was to heavyphil but I too had that stricture you mentioned in same exact area you posted. I know mine was caused by the catheter being inserted.

I did not have RP so did not respond to your initial post. What I had was 30 rounds of proton radiation. On the day I had simulation done the R/O wanted to put in a contrast through my penis uretha (spell) per his words (get a look at back side of prostate). He did this on the day doing simulation and I was having CTs and x-rays being done so set up my treatment bed.

I remember it hurt when he inserted the catheter. I then noticed some burring in the exact point you stated. Then I guess it healed but could tell it changed my urine flow.

I asked my R/O about it and he expressed the same concerned I did. If they go back in could it cause another stricter. But I think if done slowly and carefully would not have the same injury done when it was done on simulation day.

I don't like the change to my urine flow (kind of sprays versus a nice stream) but can live with it. I think it has added to my dribbling as maybe all urine has not left penis. I plan to discuss with my PCP next visit.

Thanks for sharing. Yes is not a favourable complication. Pleased yours has recovered but understand they often need to do another operation (urethroplasty) to repair the damage so try to avoid in future. My incontinence recovery was doing really well until this but set me back a little due to more dribbles, incomplete voiding and pain when urinating. I am hoping mine recovers without the op also! There is a medical study I found where this was caused when a hospital started using a larger size catheter (22) rather than the more usual (18).
I was under anesthetic when mine was inserted but is the stated major cause.

I had a stricture resulting from my DaVinci prostate removal. Surgery removed it and then I was 100% incontinent. Had to have an AUS implanted.
