GERD and Fructose Malabsorption - Constant burning throat and nausea

Posted by xcatoverx @xcatoverx, Aug 1, 2019

Hi, I am wondering if anyone has experienced anything similar to this. I’m 20 years old and have suffered from nausea and burning in my throat for several years now. I have seen two GI doctors who have tried a few different PPIs and have tested me for many things, but I continue to get worse. Currently I am diagnosed with GERD and Fructose Malabsorption. PPIs seem to help with “regular” heartburn which I would get after eating a meal, but the burning in my throat is something different. It comes out of nowhere, usually two or three hours after I have eaten something or when I wake up in the morning. It will last for 2-3 days (sometimes more) straight with severe nausea, bloating, and gas. During these spells I can barely eat anything and medicines like Gaviscon, Zantac, and Pepto don’t even touch it. Then, I will wake up the next day after having a spell and the burning will be gone, but I am left with a queasy/nauseous feeling most of the time. I have drastically changed my diet and don’t eat or drink anything acidic or irritating. I don’t have coffee, chocolate, sauces, fried foods, etc. I also don’t smoke and I am pretty underweight. Does anyone have any ideas or tips? I am so desperate for relief that I am willing to try anything.

Though I did not have nausea, I had Burning Mouth Syndrome which none of my physicians had ever heard of. I did research myself & found an organization, AAOM, that worked with burning mouth patients. Perhaps they can help you or lead you in the right direction.

Hi. I am in the same boat with you. This started years ago and I have kept food notes etc for weeks and cannot figure out what could be causing this. I am so frustrated. I am on my 2 nd gastro doc but still no answer or help. Prescribed voquezna amitriptyline and prescription strength Pepcid. Still no relief. Sometimes my lower back hurts too at the same time. Have had a couple of scopes. Still no answers. So frustrating and miserable way to live. I’ve dropped 20 lbs over the year and I’m petite. I have issues even drinking purified and bottled water. Please post if you find help.

@gerdgirl - sorry to hear that you are feeling frustrated and have not gotten the help or answers you need for your symptoms. That is awful that it seems like a miserable way to live.

gerdgirl - I'm assuming you have a diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) at this point? Do you have any other diagnoses as of yet? What is your next step in this process?

@lisalucier yes I have been diagnosed with GERD and it used to just come and go. But now this burning goes on for weeks. I get very fatigued worn down and can’t eat. I have tried everything. My hair started falling out due to weight loss and pain. The doctors just look at me when I tell them how miserable I am and how bad I feel. I have no idea what’s next. I guess try another doctor and hope eventually I can find someone who can figure it all out. Everyone hang in there. GG

I am petite also and lost 11 lbs. Went to allergist immune doctor. Suspected EoE and had gastro doctor do another endoscopy with biopsies of whole esophagus and do have those eosinophilic cells but not very high. So on Dupixent shots plus PPI and alginate.

@bdaiello Hi, thank you for that information. Is Alginate a prescribed medication? Or something natural. I have got to figure something out because this is not fun as you know feeling like this all the time. Thanks again.

@gerdgirl I have been taking an algae based product which I find very helpful. It's called Esophageal Guardian by Life Extension. I take two chewable tablets after the heaviest meal of the day. It forms a barrier on the surface of the stomach and keeps acid down. I got it from Walmart Online (wanted to be able to return locally). It's helping me get through the terrible rebound effect one experiences when trying to quit taking PPI's.
