Weight loss

Posted by chattykathy @chattykathy, Apr 10, 2017

Thank you Rosemary for tagging me in this conversation. I weighed about 240 lbs. at the time of transplant; when I returned home I continued to lose down to my lowest since age 14. I stated earlier in the PICS conversation that I had lost a bunch of weight. I actually was able to buy jeans in a size 14. I did not feel "right" at this weight. Gradually, I regained all of it back.

I started my journey in 2010 prior to transplant in 2011.

I shared my whole story on PICS and am enjoying this forum to talk about my experiences.

I am about to celebrate my 6th year postsurgery for liver/kidney and, although it took me a while to recover, I am doing well at this time. I just need to start working on the weight issues again.

Thanks for allowing me the privilege to share my story. If you have any specific questions, I am happy to answer.
Until next time, CK.

Hi @chattykathy,
Thanks for joining the Transplants group conversations as well as the PICS discussion. So intriguing that, while everyone else thought you looked great having lost weight, you weren't comfortable at a size 14. You say that you're need to start working on the weight issues again. Do you have a plan? Sometimes having a plan and sharing with others, like us on this forum, can be encouraging. @rosemarya for example talks about subscribing to the Mayo Clinic Diet newsletter to get tips on
• Delicious & nutritious recipes
• Weight-loss tips
• Research on dieting & fitness

@rosemarya Thank you. I think for now I will continue to do it on my own. I am at a plateau and can't seem to motivate myself to not eat some things that I should not eat, like breads and sweets, but part of that is because I have lost so much already and really do not want to lose more than an additional 5 pounds. I would even be happy at two, but five gives me a cushion.

Was the weight loss intentional? My son is trying to put his weight back on since his kidney/liver transplant 1-1/2 months ago, but seems to be losing instead.

@skittles25 If you are messaging me, yes the weight loss was very intentional. I started trying to lose pre-transplant to get my BMI down and once started I kept going, I have always had a very good appetite, which of course was the root of my problems. It wasn't what I ate so much as how much I ate.plus I LOVE carbs like really good bread and rolls. Right now I have to stay away from Whole Foods because they have some incredible english muffins, I think the brand on them is Stone and Hearth or something like that. The whole wheat ones have a bit of seasoning and are sooooo good. I am really bad at resisting temptations.

@linda59, @lupedelarosa12, I know that both of you also are moms and that your sons both received transplants when they were in their 20's.
Do either of you have anything to add that might be helpful to @skittles25. about her sons recent transplant and concern about weight? I know she would be happy to hear from you.
I hope that health is good for your sons.

Also I want to tag @scottb32. Did you have any weight gaining concerns after your transplant? I hope that you are doing well.

Dear Friends,
One of our sons concern was weight.... he was very keen to improve his overall health. Consequently, his words follow.
'I had a turbo trainer in the house which I attached my bike to in the house. It helped me do stuff without having to go out the house.
Didn't really loose any weight until I got a prescription from the docs for excersise and started going to the gym everyday.
Do more and think about cutting down on chocolate and fat.... steroids make you hungry, just do t eat as much. Annoying but true.xx '

Hope this helps.

We are with you all in Spirit.... giving Thankx for every extra day. Love, blessings and Happy Holidays xxxx

@linda59 "just do t eat as much. Annoying but true.xx" That right there is basically the crux of losing weight. I have lost a lot and kept most of it off (battling 4 pounds right now). My doctor told me I should cut down on my portions -- I have no idea what made him realize I was actually eating healthily except for that, but he seemed to. It's not easy to walk past a cookie on the counter and not idly eat it but it's a must, plus I'm a pretty good cook so having seconds at dinner is tempting. I rarely bake anymore since I will eat it if I do.

As I have said before, and I hate sounding like a broken record, myfitnesspal.com really helps because it makes you accountable for everything you put in your month, assuming you are honest. If you are not honest you are only deceiving yourself.

Good luck to anyone who is trying hard to lose weight. I know how difficult it is -- been there, done that. Part of it is incentive and just plain being ready to make that change. I really wanted to improve my BMI so that gave me incentive.

Exercise really does help too. I go to my health club about 5 times a week, and try to ride my recumbent bike on the other days. I honestly find that on the days I don't go I gain about a pound. I think lack of exercise is part of that, and the other part is that if I am around the house I am more apt to snack so even just getting out helps.

I want to get that four pounds back off before a doctor appointment in a month.

Weight gain is very common. 3 rules to live by as a transplant with weight gain issues. 1. Healthy diet
2. Smaller potions 3. Daily exercise.
I agree My Fitness Pal can be helpful.

@eileenheart, Welcome to Connect. Thank you for sharing these 3 rules to help transplant recipients keep their weight under control and also to promote good nutrition.
Do you have any practical suggestions to share that might encourage us to follow these 3 rules? I find myself being easily distracted by my own food temptations. My intentions are good, but I'm not consistent in practice. What do you do on a daily basis to help you with the healthy diet and portion control? Do you walk or do you have another exercise regimen that you like to follow?

Are you a transplant recipient, or a loved one of a recipient?
We look forward to hearing from you.
