steam vs UV babybottle sterilizers
i wonder if anybody uses the uv baby bottle sterilizer and how it compares to the steam one. i have a problem with sterilizing a spacer which i use to inhale levalbuterol. i also use a mask when nebulizing cromolyn sodium. i already ruined a few spacers and two masks. Recently i use alcohol to sterilize them but thats expensive for a regular use. So I thought may be uv sterilizers would do trhe job without melting the equipment. Anybody has experience using uv baby bottle sterilizers?Thank you.

@picartist Personally, I would not be comfortable using Barbicide on my equipment, as it can be difficult to rinse away completely. UV sterilization is also limited, since it cannot effectively reach all of the small internal surfaces of nebulizer components. The Falkinham/Honda lab is planning to evaluate several cleaning and sterilization methods, and I hope their findings will help guide best practices and provide reassurance. My understanding is that they plan to include baby-bottle sterilizers among the methods tested, though the timing of this work is not yet clear.

1 ReactionI just ran it by Chatbot and would not do it. The tubing alone would not be sterilized and these do not do enough of a job for the lungs. Hair salons ok, but not this.
@picartist Here is a plan that avoids 3x per day sterilizing.
Soak after each use in hot dish soap water and rinse with sterilized or filtered water. Sterilize once a day. The soaking and rinsing will eliminate a majority of bacteria, which would non have time to grow substantially in a few hours.
If you are determined to sterilize after every use, or you are using the Pari eFlow handset, why not have 3 nebulizer cups so you can sterilize once a day?

1 Reaction@lilianna The problem with the Vortex spacer is that it has a round hole for the MDI (the canister holding the medicine). My albuterol and steroid puffer have oval ports, so it really isn't a good fit. I was very sad.
@tw508 my vortex no electrostatic holding chamber has an oval mouthpiece for the inhalers which are oval ( levalbuterol and bevespi) may be look for this brand with oval holes
@tw508 I am sorry for the misinformation. I thought it was oval but it’s round but it’s tight rubber or silicone and when I insert the canisters, they seem to be tight.
@lilianna Ok, no problem. Thanks for the correction.
I have a Grownsy baby bottle sterilizer/dryer/uv. I do all three of these methods after boiling my Pari LC neb cup parts for 11 minutes after each use. My pulm pharmacist says to replace the neb cups every two weeks or at least once a month. I also put my electric toothbrush brush part in the Grownsy daily.
I sterilize using a microwave steamer nag. Dump in the neb cups, 1/3 cup of water per bag instructions, five minutes in the microwave. Heard about it at an NTM conference.

I do exactly the same. Was suggested by my respiratory pt at Mayo in Rochester. Saw the NTM video as well.
