Muscle weakness…afib meds?
Folks, reasonably fit 69-year old male here. I seem to have lost a lot of muscle strength since starting afib medication 20 months ago. I take Eliquis and metropolol (a switch from losartan) for afib. I also take rosuvastatin, ezetimibe, allopurinol and D3.
I know that muscle loss is a function of aging but this seems a little more pronounced than that. Anybody else experience this?
Thanks!

Agreed! I’m on Eliquis, Metoprolol and Flecainide and have experienced what you and others have reported. At first, I attributed it to being 76 and not being able to continue senior aerobics, as well as line dancing. And then the dizziness contributed, too! While grateful that the medicines mitigate Afib and help prevent a stroke, it is a challenge to work up the energy and stamina to do what I was able to do just two years ago….

Anecdotally, seems like beta blockers are this group’s source of muscle weakness. I feel like a schmoo from L’ilAbner.
Also, several of us here going in for ablation number 2, myself included. Good luck, and even better EPs, to us all!

1 ReactionI am 20 days away from being 78. I took Eliquis for about 3 years. I complained of muscle, joint and bone pain. I was told repeatedly by many of my doctors from internist to cardiologist that those were not side effects of Eliquis, I finally told my cardiologist that I would no longer take Eliquis but would take low dose aspirin twice a day. Within a week of substituting the low dose aspirin for the Eliquis, my muscle, joint, and bone pain went away. Several medications have caused me to have these reactions. You are your best advocate and you know your body better than anyone else. I have had two ablations. First one lasted almost 9 years and the second lasted until recently when I had the Watchman implant but the AFib seems to be occurring less often and without the rapid heart rate.

1 ReactionCheck out posts for Eliquis. it appears some people do,, some don't. I had some problems while on it that were much worse in the beginning when I went off. Problems ranged from intense joint pain to feeling like my feet were wood in the beginning, along with vertigo and general digestion issues. Little by little, better, my walk is still a bit odd, balance a bit off and I've lost confidence stepping off and on a curb or walking on a slant. I had a saddle pulmonary embolism which was evidently mostly surgically removed, but still had two clots in my arm and one in my leg, which on Eliquis are no longer there. It is heartening to have a site where one can recount their experience and helpful to know others have experienced the same thing. My guess is that my body just needs to build back muscle tissue again or maybe just tissue. Wishing you wonderful!
