After colon resection: What helps with severe gas?

Posted by karina1954 @karina1954, Aug 9, 2022

11 weeks since surgery, I was wondering if it's fairly common to have severe gas to the point that it hurts, so bad that it feels like your back is gonna break 😔

I used OTC Gas-X when I was going through radiation and couldn’t have any gas during radiation. It worked well and I used it after the reversal of my iliostomy.

Hi,
I had sigmoid resection in June/23.
I seem to have a lot of extreme smelly gas usually about 1/2 hour after eating anything. I don't have pain, but this is very embarrassing as sometimes it is hard to control.
I never had this until this surgery.
Has anyone else experienced this?

@mfinley Hi, I’m just over 2 years out after colon resection due to perforated colon caused by colon cancer tumor blockage. It does seem to change everything, doesn’t it? I find that eating fresh fruit regularly, especially non-acidic types like cantaloupe and strawberries, really helps to calm my digestion. I also take a probiotic capsule every evening after dinner. There’s a good one that has 13 different strains with prebiotics that helped to rebuild my digestion after bouts of extreme nausea before and after surgery. I still have gassy times if I eat sweet carbohydrate snacks as the occasional treat but it’s mostly much better.

@larust8 yes it does change everything. I've been told that the bowel obstructions would happen again. At some point down the road because of extreme scar tissue.I was in the hospital in july and august for the same thing. That almost killed me in june. But it resolved itself with in youtube, pain, medication, and so forth.

@mfinley Hi, yes it's by a company called Canlist Health. PROBIOTIC 3 Prebiotics 120 Billion CFUs 18 Strains. The cost is $9.99 for 60 capsules (1 per day) on Amazon. it's very affordable and seems to help a lot with regularity for me since I tend to constipation and gas sometimes. I especially like it in the winter when I'm not eating as many fresh fruits and veggies from the garden. I do like to treat myself to fresh fruit salad too, that makes my digestion very happy.

@mfinley It's rough for sure. The doctors were worried I'd get sepsis from the perforation leaking bad things into my abdomen. It took a long time to be able to eat again and regain my strength. But I feel pretty good now, still able to work in my huge garden and cut firewood with my son. I'm grateful for every day. Let's hope we're the lucky ones who don't have to go through that again! Try the probiotics. I know the whole probiotic thing can seem like it's being taken to a faddish extreme sometimes but there's definitely some good science about the importance of a healthy gut biome so it's worth a shot. I hope it helps you!
