Doctors will say that Eliquis (apixaban) "degrades" the clot. It doesn't remove it or destroy it. It degrades it. In a simple sense it stops the progression of the clot and then waits for the body's own defense systems to do the degrading. I have been told that this "degrading" can take some time - possibly months. I developed clots when I was in the hospital last year. Not big ones, but they were doing some damage. I was put on apixaban immediately and I am still on it, although at a very low dose. The doc who manages the clot said he wants me to stay on apix for at least another year even thought there are no signs of the clot now. This is purely a preventive measure.
