Occipital Neuralgia Relief

Posted by itskingzman @itskingzman, Mar 7, 2024

Valium and a medrol dose pack. That's what fixed my occipital neuralgia. I've had my finger torn off, kidney stones, nothing compares to this. This is for anyone suffering like I did. I was confined to my couch for 3 weeks straight because I couldn't lay may head down to sleep. I had lighting like pains in my head non stop, the only thing that would help is taking a very hot shower. I was on oxycodone, oxycarbazepine, methocarbamol, indomethacin, Diclofenac sod dr, cyclobenzaprine, nortriptyline, gabapentin. I went to a pain clinic and got nerve blocks in both sides of my head, it didn't help. After trying everything and considering surgery, what helped it go away was Valium and a medrol dose pack.

I had a concussion 2 years ago, had hit my head since then and prolonged it - was always treating it as a concussion until I saw a neurologist a year after dealing with this “mild concussion symptoms”, he diagnosed me with cervicogenic headaches, I feel my symptoms align with occipital neuralgia, ive tried pt, had a c7 steroid injection, massage therapy and acupuncture with nothing working. Its constant irritation pretty much 24/7 the past 2 years, this sore tender feeling on the back of the top of my head with pressure on the sides/behind my eye and into my face - any reccomendations or people who have solved similar issues, I really feel stuck 🙁

I am coming off a 20 day occiptal-neuralgia headache that most serve I have ever had. Started on right side
very tight muscles. Due for my shots Jan12,2026. My question: should I try a headache specilist center (Virtual
Headache center) or something like this, or see a specilist from my major Sutter Hospital. I think most regular
neuralgiaist dont seem to understand? This time the pain shifted to my like side (only ice pack helped) I can go
a few months free then the horrible "Flair Up" happens, it is affecting my life?any ideas?

Do u mind sharing the dose and how often to take the Valium? I just finished a Medrol pack along with muscle relaxers and although it helped tremendously it didn't get rid of it. I have Valium but I only take it as needed for anxiety. Thank you for your help.

@ajsmith1273 I will be having my nerve block shots Jan 12, 2026. I plan on asking about Valium/Modrol dose? sounds as if some have been helped. This past month has been simply
awful with the Holidays. I have been using the Pivotal Therapy Pad Amazon $45.00 cradle neck
the pressure points feel good across my neck followed by faithful ice packs.I do plan on asking about a Occiptal Neuralgia
Specilist, most know about reg. Migrains but don't completely understand our type of headache.
I have quit taking over counter med, they do not touch my pain. Muscle relaxors seem to help
a little, I will report next week. Has anyone ever taken Amitriptyline for pain?

@suszy39 thanks so much for the info - I hope you get something positive out of the procedure and can hopefully learn some helpful things from the doc, I have an appt with another spine and neck specialist to see what they think, just have to keep trying!

Hi there... i have had nerve blockers put in my neck and up in the top of neck/scull area. I also have found an amazing massure that massages my head down the side of my jaw... down the sides of my neck. As much as i love traction it was making it worse.... The massure seems to be onto something with this massaging down the sides of my neck and my head. I also get relief from a bowen therapist that flicks across muscles in the base of my scull. Just incase it is helpful to anyone... especially those nerve blockers they are a game changer.

@suszy39 Self massaging is Kayla Duncan LMT. She suffered from our condition herself.
It is now on my daily radar. Another good one is Dr. Jon Sanders " Magic Muscle Neck' time and patiences.

@suszy39 yes it was one of the first things I took. It’s old school anti depressants before they made SSRIs. They don’t really use it for mental illness anymore but for neuropathic pain. It made mine worse and the combo with other meds was a pain hellscape.
