Morning "Hangover" from mirtazapine

Posted by jgshoes @jgshoes, 3 days ago

Having brutal depressive mornings after taking only 7.5mg of mirtazapine to help sleep. Curious if anyone has experienced similar side effect.

I definitely know what you’re talking about because I was also taking Mirtazapine two years ago, I had no idea what I was in for, my dose was the same as yours and I researched this drug before taking it which is something I generally do and it had very good reviews on how well it worked. I did not sleep well and when I did, all I had were nightmares, I woke soaking wet and tired, I then learned what restless legs were all about. I tried to stay on them hoping that the side effects would go away but they didn’t, the feeling of having a hangover was profound and it took quite a while for it to pass, worst of all my doctor was not available for a couple of months so I tried to get help from other sources, eventually I saw a doctor who told me to stop taking them because my dose was low and I would be alright. I’m still amazed by how many people have very good results with this drug but for me it was a proverbial nightmare, I don’t think that the heavy feeling of being hungover is good but perhaps it might go away, there’s far better medication available to help you sleep and they don’t have bad side effects.

@frouke
Thank you. It has been a downward spiral. I wish it did work better.

If I may make a suggestion, please go back to your doctor and tell them what you’re going through, it’s hard to say that the symptoms will go away, in my experience they didn’t go away so I just wanted to get off them. I am currently going through the same thing, I need some help with finding the right medication too because the one I use now is not helping me much, my anxiety is the side effects and anxiety this causes. I have a new doctor who wants to help me stop the medication I currently use so I feel ready to take on the challenge because I am so tired. I really hope that you can get help with the same thing so that you will feel better soon.

I do not feel especially depressed in the mornings while taking Mirtazipine. I drink my 2 cups of coffee upon getting up and then do a 1/2 hr meditation.

Thank you for the kind response.

@frouke Thank you. I see my Dr in a week. I will try to get in sooner.

Oh that’s no good! Yeah definitely communicate with your prescriber because they certainly wouldn’t want you to be suffering from the medication. I take the same dose for insomnia, though I do have depression and anxiety. It seems to help. I often feel groggy in the mornings, but that may not be due to that medication.

I was on 7.5 mg mirtazapine 3 years ago, hopeful it would help my digestive system and anxiety and insomnia but I had the exact same problem. Absolutely lethargic during the day from exhaustion. I went off of it because of the side effects but I did learn afterwards that mirtazapine is an unusual drug in that the tired feeling, the sleepiness effect is much stronger in a lower dose than in a higher dose. Cut to this past November and my new psychiatrist suggested trying it for my anxiety and insomnia and since I already knew that 7.5 mg was a miserable experience, I asked her if we could try 15 mg , which we did, and it's been a completely different experience. It's helping my digestion and my anxiety. It did take a few weeks for me to get used to that dose for insomnia, leading to nights of only being able to sleep in increments of 4 hours, but now I'm completely adjusted and it's been a very beneficial medication for me.
