Timeline for Neurology in Rochester?

Posted by tsinnc @tsinnc, Nov 14, 2025

Hi everyone,

My physician referred me to Mayo Rochester ‘s Neurology department in mid-October. I had my phone call with them on 10/21/25, and was told I’d likely hear back within 7-10 business days about whether or not they would be able to accept my case. It’s been longer than that, but I haven’t received a denial letter yet, either. Does anyone have recent experience with this department, and how long they had to wait to hear back? Thank you!

Welcome @tsinnc, It's been quite a few years since I got a referral from my Mayo Family Clinic primary care doc for an appointment with a neurologist but it did take a few months to get the appointment due to the number of appointment requests being handled and I'm sure that there are more requests than available appointments now. It has been a lot longer than the expected 7 to 10 business days since they were supposed to call so if it were me I would try calling them to see if there has been an update or any openings.

Rochester Neurology Appointment Center - 507-284-1588 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central time, Monday through Friday. More information on the website here - https://www.mayoclinic.org/departments-centers/neurology/resources-medical-professionals/mpc-20117059.

Are you trying to get a diagnosis and treatment plan?

@johnbishop

Thank you! My current neurologists are referring me there for diagnosis and a treatment plan because diagnosis has been elusive and I’ve seen everyone good here (Duke.)

I called in Friday to check in, and they said they sent me and email on 11/12 with some follow up questions, but I combed through all of my email folders and there was no email from them. Fortunately I called, and was able to answer the questions they had. Now I guess I wait some more; not sure how long because they didn’t give me a timeframe this time.

It concerns me that I was unable to locate the email they said they sent. I logged into my patient portal to verify my email address on file, and it was correct. There was nothing in Spam, Trash, or my Inbox, so I don’t know that they actually sent it, or that it went to the wrong address somehow.

I think I’ll just check in again at the end of each week if I don’t hear from them, and pray not to get the denial letter in the meantime.

Thank you for taking the time to reply to me. I really appreciate it!

@tsinnc That’s good news. Glad you made contact and hopefully won’t have to wait much longer for the appointment.

I received a denial letter after 15 days I applied to be seen at the Neutology Department .
No paperwork sent no nothing.
This ppl literally answered me that they were overloaded with patients and were not able to diagnose my case and that I should go to my regular health practice and let them decide what to do. The thing is that I don’t have any specialist to see anywhere . I thought this Mayo Clinic was more efficient as they advertise that in a week they will diagnose you. Is it all lies? Should treat patients humanly .

@ligol, it is hard to receive that denial letter. Unfortunately Mayo Clinic has more requests for appointments than available openings. Is there a large academic center near you that you can seek the care of a neurologist?

You may wish to see if there is a hospital near you that is part of the Mayo Clinic Care Network
https://www.mayoclinic.org/about-mayo-clinic/care-network/members
The Mayo Clinic Care Network helps keep care local by providing guidance and answers to many questions that might otherwise require a referral to a specialist. In many cases, this spares patients the expense and inconvenience of additional appointments and unnecessary travel. If specialty care is needed, patients can be seen by local providers or referred to Mayo Clinic.

Just wanted to share that I have an appointment! They called Thursday (12/18) to let me know my initial evaluation is 2/2/26 and that they are working on scheduling all the necessary tests/consults for while I am there. The scheduler told me to expect 5-7 days of appointments, but so far I’m scheduled out until 2/13/26, it’s unclear if I’ll be coming home in between sessions. With the holiday week, I don’t expect to know for sure until next week, but just having some things on the calendar is so exciting/scary!

I’m happy you got an appointment with the mayo neurologist group, I was denied but they did want my medical records prior to review of my case so I feel taken advantage of and that my case is to complicated and above their pay grade. I can get an appointment with my neurosurgeon in a couple of weeks, I have a stroke after a 25 year long history of brain damage issues from multiple craniotomy’s in 2000. Feeling kind of spicy.

@tsinnc I was recently accepted. I tried self referral, and evidently, it is much harder to self refer, because I was denied. After a few months, I saw my Rheumatologist, and she and my primary both referred me. This time, I was accepted. The following is the flow as best as I remember it;
1. Submit a referral.
2. You are sent an email that contains a link for a questionnaire.
3. Complete the questionnaire.
4. They respond with an approval or denial. On my self referral, they responded with the denial in less than a week.. On my doctor's referral, it was two to three weeks.
5. Upon acceptance, they send you an email and txt that you have been accepted and a link to schedule your appointment s with Neurology.
