MAID (Medical Aid In Dying)

NY governor is passing MAID this month or Jan '26 with a few contingency (waiting period, two Dr signing off and written or video consent).

Such a VERY personal choice/subject just wondering how people feel about MIAD being on this side. Not looking to get political in anyway.

My father, at the age of 98, fell in a nursing home and sustained a compound fracture of both his tibia and fibula. One of the bones remained protruding from his leg as his bones were too "old" to set and fuse. He lived the remainder of this life, another 7 months, with an un-stabilized compound fracture and was in pain every time he was moved. They actually wanted to amputate his leg toward the end.
I would have been so grateful if he could have been offered medically assisted relief.

My father, at the age of 98, fell in a nursing home and sustained a compound fracture of both his tibia and fibula. I am so sorry. What a terrible way to lose your father.

While it allowed the nursing home to bill for another 7 months, the true word for this kind of "care" is torture.

@colleenyoung, is it okay to talk about hospice and MAID on this forum? Of course, everyone have differing points of view.

Colleen, could I ask you for some advice about being seen at Mayo (it's been over a year since I started radiation. I don't want to "out" anyone at Mayo, especially the people helping me. I've already had a near fatal incident if I hadn't caught it and advocated for myself. Patient relations knows and has written me a letter of apology.

NYS has some of the worst health care for its elderly and/or dementia patients. Especially for those of us with just Medicare, no Medicaid. I have seen it firsthand with my Mother and brother. Now I am dealing with it with my sweetie. Insurance companies in NY worry about their balance sheets, their bottom lines, and making money. NOT the People. If you have resources like the Mayo Clinic, I am happy for you. Thank goodness you could advocate for yourself, and Patient Relations had the respect to apologize. If you or your health care proxy complains here in NY, you get discharged. Because we are just average "Joe and Jane" citizens, we have to deal however we can. I truly wish all well and hope that the health care is much much better in other states. MAID has just been enacted in NY state, and I truly believe it is to accommodate the insurance companies' bottom line.
