Lightheadedness at times.

Posted by bob7410 @bob7410, Jan 30, 2025

Not sure this is the right place to post but I did not see a better one and I am also starting to look through some other posts about this. But thought I would ask this. So I have this health problem that I need advice with. I see my family Doctor again in April to talk about this again after my elimination diet but not sure if they have an idea or if he will try to get me to see a specialist. I am a male in late twenties. My problem is I just feel off in the head almost every day at this point (It little hard to explain but kind light headed/dizzy/brain fog and can just be a few minutes/hours a day or all day)

Also at times I get stronger, dizzy more so than above or to say more than what normally I get (This is how the lightheadedness started out as before the daily problems about a year ago with “dizzy spells”). This happens a lot when I'm talking with people and get “excited/worked up” in conversation (but not always, once in a while it just pops up on its own in normal conversations with family etc…) (Like if I get upset, excited over watching a football game, talking with friends, playing a board game, etc…) I then sometimes (does not happen every time I get “worked up” but feels like its getting worse) I than get a wave of lightheadedness, sometimes almost like I'm going to pass out but never have passed out and sometimes my face and or hands get tingly during the same time. When this “hits” me I must get away from people and try to “calm” down as it messes up my head/body and my anxiety goes up too (I don't think like a panic attack its just my anxiety goes up because of the crazy lightheadedness and I'm afraid something is wrong with me). This has been going on for over a year (I feel in the last year I've not had maybe one week that I could say I felt “good” and sometimes I'm hoping just for a whole “good” day) and I thinks it's getting harder now because of the anxiety I get when I go out with friends because I am scared I will get super lightheaded in public.

When I get a big wave coming over me of lightheadedness, if I leave the environment I am in when it happens it will get “better” but still have lingering "side effects" for 30+ mins sometimes.I think I eat pretty good, maybe not great but okay, and stay hydrated, don't drink/smoke, and keep a semi active life.

I also found out I have gastritis last year (March) but don't know the cause or if it has anything to do with this head problem. But the DR put me on dicyclomine for my stomach and after about a week (I will say I did have the stronger dizzy spells before being put on dicyclomine but not very often) After that week on the med I was super lightheaded a bunch on and off till I told my DR I had to get off of it because I was thinking it was making me dizzy so I got of the dicyclomine and I think it improved a bit over the next week or two but after that I feel the dizziness and lightheadedness has just stayed the same or slowly got worse. So not sure if the med had anything to do with it or just a different dizziness at the some time or what but thought I would put that in.
So my family DR had me do an elimination diet (eat chicken, fish, veggies, fruit, some nuts, etc…) to see if it helps with my gastritis and or head problems. I did that for a month to see if symptoms got better. Unfortunately this was not helpful it seems. If anything, my symptoms got worse for my stomach the first three weeks of the diet. and by the end I was the some in regards to my head problems.

I feel this is slowly getting worse over time at this point it's starting to affect my mood and work productivity some days. I'm just trying to find answers to why I get my heads all loppy and not sure if the family DR is going to be able to help me. But reading other people's posts on similar things has discouraged me as I am not sure there even is an answer. Sorry for the long details and hope it makes since. TIA

@judyb200 could you have an ear problem?

@SusanEllen66 Thanks for your suggestion. I believe cerebral microvascula disease can be a mix of ear, eyes, and blood brain flow. I do wear hearing aids so likely I there are ear connections.

I have the same problem of lightheadedness. I was diagnosed with cerebral microvascular disease. I think it is a circulation problem in the brain. I have had it for 2.5 years. Neurologist ignored me on my question

@tcainaru
Has it worsened in the 2.5 years and are you a senior?

I have feeling of lightheaded all day, getting worse, NOT woozy, terrible balance, when I stand not sitting. I do sit to stand exercises (25) reps, leg strengthening exercises, climb 4 flights of steps x daily, no hypertension, clear carotid arteries, have MCI with word finding, no memory problems. Guess there is no treatment for this, just grin and bear it until stroke. I am presenting this info to my doctor next week. Up to finding this, I have been inadequate at description of symptoms.

@judyb200 It sounds like an 'orthostatic' vascular condition. There is such a thing as POTS, a type of arrhythmia that happens when people stand, but it's a tachyarrhythmia which I do not suppose is the case for you. Instead, you have a drop in blood pressure, maybe due to your heart slowing too much on standing, or just prior to.

This is just an uneducated guess from someone with no medical training.

Good to have your input, thank you. Psychosomatic, today I have no funny feelings! It is not just when I stand, usually it is when I walk too.

Nothing to be sorry about! I’m pleased that you had the courage to share this with us, on this particular forum! I am of the opinion that you have come to the right place, to share, and seek advice, from others, who may have had similar lightheadedness! I, also, have had lightheadedness, and it has concerned me enough, that I did seek professional medical help. Has your primary care provider checked you out for orthostatic hypotension? If not, please ask him to do so! With your occasional tingling sensations, perhaps you should be checked out for numbness in the extremities. It seems like this lightheadedness that you get is frequent, rather than an occasional occurrence. My advice would be to ask your primary provider ( family physician), if the tingling and lightheadedness would warrant a referral to a Neurologist. If he/she agrees then, if I were you, i would ask for a referral! I am nearly 80 years old, and been through many neurological testings, and my tingling sensations. and lightheadedness problems ended up with a diagnosis, from a neurologist! I was in my late 20’s when I started to notice some neurological symptoms! Wishing you the best! I hope you can get some answers soon, as to why you are having these concerning symptoms!

I feel the same way , some times I think about matters stressful or not I find my self to stop breathing or if I am hungry it much worse , also I can be in and around people’s feeling stress just being around people’s wondering when some one will come out with a gun and just start shooting peoples , also straining to try to see small print on my phone some times can make me loose vision in one or the other eye for a few minutes , also I can not pay any video games because I start concentrating too hard on how to beat the game and I forget to breathe and I start feeling light headed , also when working I am trying to be careful thinking about my work and safety I will forget to breathe and my wife said I start turning blue , the best way to help me stop feeling light headed when I am breathing is to drink gatorade, mixed with the powder with rich mixing .
And to avoid thinking about thins to much and stay away from crowd of people’s I do not know , I had to MRI scans with the dye they do not see any arteries that’s clogged with plaque and I’ve had two exams and they say nothing wrong with my eyes.
The only think left is to have me put on a heart monitor to see if I am trying to relax to much I am slowing my heart beat down to much and making me have dizzy spells . I am 57 years old male

@randyinharmony Placing you on a 'loop recorder' for a couple of weeks, perhaps longer, might indeed catch pauses or other heart arrhythmia which causes you to lose proper blood pressure right when you need it most, such as shortly after standing after having sat for a period of time and relaxed, or even had a nap while seated. This is positional hypotension, or what is called 'orthostatic' hypotension.

If you'd rather not deal with doctors or drastic life-style changes, and if you'd like to reduce the risk of a head-splitting fall, or a fracture, you can try an exercise that involves quarter-or semi-standing, and then reseating yourself again, repeat this several times, to get pumped up again. Your system will respond in time, but it might take two or three pretend stands, and then sitting back down to get your heart to react so that on the third or fourth 'attempt' you really do continue to rise and you should be better and safer.

Note that this might not be a perfect solution for you. It would be best to get thoroughly assessed in case you need something more sophisticated and reliable in the way of an intervention, so please see a cardiologist.

I am going through EXACTLY what you are going through. I am 24. The way you described this is exactly what i’ve been trying to explain to people but nobody understands. I just showed this to my mom and said this is exactly everything i am dealing with and she understands me more clearly. I would love to be in touch to communicate about different things we can do and try to solve this as well as ruling out what we have tried..

Take a look at https://www.mayoclinic.org/drugs-supplements for drug interactions and side effects. I have found it useful and sometimes has more information than a doctor has access to. (Showed my neurologist the interactions (7) with existing drugs and she stopped it.)

Lightheadedness - neurologist ordered a CT Scan with imaging of neck and head - looking for blockage in blood flow.

Low blood pressure causes some of my lightheadedness - when i cut grass, shovel snow, take long bike rides.
